She wanted so badly to move against him, to press their bodies together until there was not an inch of skin between them. The mere thoughts of such intimate touches were enough to make her dizzy.
"Please," she whimpered, the ache of passion knotting her insides. Its sudden presence shook her. The stubble of his beard was pleasantly rough against her sensitive skin. She felt herself slipping again into that mindless oblivion of sensation, pleasure singing on her skin as he deepened the kiss.

Chapter One
Vera's wings spread wide to follow the path of the twisting, curving road through the East Greenmore mountainscape, a splash of white on the gray ribbon of concrete winding through the spring-green country. Her sense of direction had always been awful. It would be faster if she could ignore the winding roads and forged her own route, a straight line ahead home, but she had gotten lost enough times to know that her short cuts generally end up taking a longer time if she had just followed the path.
She was glad for the layers of sunscreen she had slathered on herself. The lingering sun and billowing white clouds in the light blue sky would had burned her skin before she tanned.
Rounding the curve, she turned her face to hide from the glare of the sun. The speed-generated breeze threatened to tug her auburn hair out of it's bun and then she would really look a mess. At least she had not lost her sunglasses this time.
Still, she could not really complain. The weather was good enough for her to enjoy the view, which was a rare occurrence in itself. It had been snowing a lot of late and flying in the dreadful wind and snow always made her feel like she was turning into an icicle.
Contentment etched in her features from a day well spent.
In her duffle bag, she carried a lightweight camera and a notebook contained scribbled impressions. She had collected a good deal of information on the local flora and fauna. Not many people came to Greenmore, mostly because their ancestors had specifically built the place so that it was not so easily accessible. There were winding roads and treacherous forests with any number of sprites and faeries, gnomes and spirits to keep outsiders from accidentally stumbling upon them.
They had an airport these days to avoid the treacherous journey, though, and their tourism business did fairly well, especially during the warmer months.
The beautiful mountains and valleys hid little known species of flower faeries that had never been seen anywhere else. They disguised themselves as dandelion flowers, yellow blossoms exploding into the air whenever one was discovered. She was working on cataloguing their diet and mating habits. It was the season for it, according to her father. There always seem to be an increase in dandelion flowers at the start of the new year, but no one had actually seen how dandelion faeries mate. Some flower faeries species are self-reproducing, carrying both male and female organs, but those flower faeries tend to be on their own.
She suspects that dandelion faeries might actually be one of few faery species that reproduce with sexual process. Jotted notations reaffirmed the camera's record of dandelion faeries doing complicated dances in the air, the camera's zooming lenses being tested to it's absolute limits to capture the way their wings folded and antenna straightened. They were peculiar looking. All flower faeries were, really. Their wings, when spread completely, looked deceivingly like dandelion flowers in full bloom. Their heads were bright green, as were the rest of their body, which resembled katydids, bush crickets. They would be classified as arthropodes if not for their ability to channel the magical ley lines and build nests where the magical energy were strongest. Their young could channel that magic, protecting themselves from predators with little flashes of light that, to the small predators in the area, resembled mini explosions.
Vera had spent a good while trying to let them know that she meant them no harm, but several bird species preyed on dandelion flowers and they exploded the moment they were sighted, leaving her rubbing her eyes and disoriented for several seconds after every time.
She would spend hours hidden among the trees hoping for a sighting with only the natural wildlife to keep her company. It was not all for naught. She had captured the image of a blue mongoose, a species that was nearly extinct due to a period where they were hunted for the unique color of their fur and the ability of the fur to shift to different colors depending on the wearer's mood. She'll have to submit a report to the Nature Preservation Ministry about that sighting. The mountains of Greenmore were protected, but there will always be the greedy businessman trying to clear out land in order to build skyscrapers. Heavens knew they had no need for skyscrapers around these parts.
She was glad that she had chosen to hide atop a tall tree when she spotted a miniature erymanthian boar. Smaller than it's namesake, the miniature erymanthian boar was nothing to laugh about, it's many sharp tusks and terribly short temper making it so much more dangerous than the average boar. There was also the matter of it's liking of fresh meat.
She shuddered as she took dozens of pictures of the boar. Another reason why tourists were not encouraged to venture into these forests without guides.
Captivated by the charm of the forest, Vera had tarried longer than she had intended. A glance at her watch made her fold her wings back, increasing acceleration of her wings. The last thing she wanted was for her father to become concerned about her whereabouts. She regretted that she had not charged her phone prior to leaving that morning. He must be worried sick, not being able to contact her.
Ever since his heart attack last winter, Oswald Sowy had become more conscious of her absences. Her father had always been a little bit of a worrywart, especially when it came to his only daughter. She had spent the majority of her youth exploring these forests with him. He was the one who nurtured the adventurous spirit in her and taught her all the names of the trees and birds they had come across. He encouraged her to explore the forests on her own after her eighteenth birthday.
At first, she thought he had grown tired of her and needed his own freedom, but now she realized that it was because he had not felt well. He had kept his illness to himself at first, but after his second heart attack, Yaakov had gotten in touch with her and told her what her father had been hiding from her. She had been ready to drop everything and stay at home to take care of him, but Osward had rejected her suggestion, insisting that if it came to it, a temporary nurse and their housekeeper-cook, Henriette could take adequate care of him.
She was glad that she had taken his advice to heart now. She worked in the mornings and returned home to share her findings with him. He admitted that he had missed exploring with her and looked forward to her daily updates.
She flapped her massive wings forward to bring herself to a graceful stop at the soft grassy landing patch leading to the large white house nestled on the mountain slope amid the trees. It was an old building, once the main house of a large estate, but the fertile valley land had been sold off some years ago. All that remained of the former land was the immediate grounds of the house and the few acres surrounding it. It was for the best, in any case. they did not have the resources to hire help to clear out the land.
There was a car parked in the driveway. She smile wryly at the sight. Although the doctor had limited the amount of time Oswald was to spend in the office of his cave exploration operation to three days a week, her father had insisted on daily reports when he wasn't there. Beau Bachman's car was, therefore, a familiar sight.
The garage was separate from the house, a small stable converted some hundred years ago to hold automobiles. There were a good deal of vehicles up on the mountains these days, cars imported in to make travelling for those who were not gifted with flight easier. It was also safer to travel with a vehicle during the freezing winter months and during thunderstorms. Still, Vera preferred to fly everywhere.
Tipping her sunglasses atop her head, she adjusted her hold of her camera case and swiftly climbed up the veranda steps to the front door.
There was a pause in her stride as she entered the the foyer, pushing the door shut behind her and turning to the study that had originally been the front parlor of the old house. The solid oak doors slid open at the touch of her hand, bringing the conversation within to an abrupt end.
Her heart squeezed at the sight of the harrowed and worried lies that aged her father's face by years. He was only sixty-five, but his heart attacks had aged him significantly. It wasn't just illness that aged him now, however. There was something on his mind. When his gaze landed on her, his expression underwent a transformation, the tension smoothing into a welcoming smile. The instant reaction to mask his feelings puzzled and worried her. The last time he hid something from her, it was his worsening health that culminated in a heart attack.
Good evening,
she greeted, her voice cheerful as she deposited her duffle bag on the sturdy oak desk and dug into her coat for her phone. She went to charging station by the door, unplugged her power bank and the plugged her phone in. I'm sorry I didn't call. My phone died sometime in the afternoon,
she explained. Were you worried?
I figured what happened when you left your charging thing here,
he said.
Power bank,
she laughed, bending down to brush her lips to the pallor of his cheeks, a color that had become natural to his complexion. He used to be tanned, but the doctor said he had to limit the amount of time he spent outdoors these days.
I knew you would wander in once you got hungry,
he said. Beau was becoming concerned whether you were going to show up.
Vera looked in the direction her father had glanced. Beau was very adept at keeping hidden when he did not want to be noticed. Such was the nature of snake
