Dawn was only a promise on the eastern horizon as I turned off the N1 onto the R576 towards the town of Settlers.
The potholed road stretched ahead of me like a patchwork quilt, but I had the road to myself and could enjoy the sight of guinea-fowl flocks and multiple coveys of Swainson’s francolin feeding next to the road as dawn broke. Later on, a lone yellowbill duck flew over my car and a crested francolin crossed the road.

The Springbok Flats is a special wingshooting destination. The mixture of agriculture and thick stands of natural bush provides an ideal environment for game birds to flourish
