    1. Introduction

I want to make flipping channels as well known and recognized as mindfulness is today. It deserves that. You deserve that because flipping channels works powerful in the brain and it's a key tool to dealing with difficult relationships, challenges, and situations.

This book will show you how it works and why. Let me start off with a story to illustrate the power of our framings, which is our interpretations of things and situations. I once worked with two women who had similar job functions, those of canvassing and conducting sales meetings with potential clients. One woman told me that she experienced such meetings as an exam which created quite a bit of resistance and made her feel really uncomfortable.

The other woman then looked at the first woman with surprise. Do you know how I perceive them? She asked. And of book, the first woman would love to hear that. I see my meetings as my conquest, she said while displaying a very different body language. Now, these are two completely different perceptions of two similar recurring events, whether you take one view or the other will have a major impact on how you use your energy before those meetings, during those meetings and after those meetings. Which blind spots do you have? What do you pay attention to and how do you feel?

A channel is like a filter and interpretation, it leads your attention, it colors your experiences, and it's very much it very much creates your emotions. An important brain role is called confirmation bias. We filter information in a way that supports the framing that we've chosen. So, the exam woman interprets every lifted eyebrow, every note jotted down as potential criticism, a threat.

At any given moment, you choose your filters, often unconsciously, though, but as we will see during this book, you can influence your filters and turn your brain into a player rather than an opponent, thus, creating much more useful results. When you rechannel something, you deliberately change your view, your perspective, what is at stake here is not how those meetings actually are. It's not as if one woman is right in her interpretation and the other is not. When we talk about framings and flipping channels, we are importantly not using a criterion of truth or falls right or wrong.

Rather, we measure my level of resourcefulness. To which extent does a particular framing increase or decrease the resourcefulness of an individual, a team or a community? When the terrorist attacks had hit Norway in July 2011, leaving seventy-seven people dead, the Norwegian prime minister Jens Stoltenberg addressed the mourners gathered for the Rose March in the streets of Oslo.

He then said, out of all this pain, we can glimpse something valuable that has taken root. What we see this evening may be the largest and most important march that the Norwegian people have taken part in since the Second World War.

A march for democracy, solidarity, and tolerance. People all over the country are standing shoulder to shoulder at this moment. We can learn from this, do more of this. Each and every one of us can make the fabric of democracy a little stronger. This is flipping channels in action, giving life to interpretations that make people feel hope, resourcefulness, and the opportunity to create something meaningful out of a devastating loss or a huge challenge.

Flipping channels works for individuals, groups, organizations, and societies, and it works, it ought to be in the water we drink, scientists say, just as iodine is added to table salt in many countries and vitamin D to conflicts, then really, we ought to add the ability to rechannel it to the water we drink. Before we move on to describe what this cause is, let's just quickly look at what this cause is not.

This is not a book on brain anatomy loaded with technical expressions, clinical cases and word dropping. It's not difficult to impress and overwhelm people with the enormous vocabulary of neuroscience. The art lies in linking terminology to usage so that you know enough to understand and boost your ability to apply it and you increase your likelihood of implementing the insights, creating a real difference to your everyday life. It's not either book of recorded lectures really made for another audience with no interaction with subscribers with you.

This is indeed a TaylorMade book in applied neuroscience, where technical words are used when relevant and with powerful methods that boost your ability to rechannel this book, invites you to be active and share your experiences. It takes your feedback into account.

So please give it its plan to renovate sessions. But hey, if this turns out to be a great group, Fab, I'll stay. This book offers four layers of learning. There is a knowledge layer where you get to know the brain better and get relevant references to research articles and books.

There's a method there where you introduce to powerful flipping channels methods. There's a layer of experimentation and reflection, because if you want to learn to rechannel, you must actively create and strengthen the relevant pathways in your brain by trying things, tweaking habits and behaviors and exploring how the methods work in real life. Your life there is last but not least, a layer of inspiration.

And you are invited to take an active part in this by sharing your best practice examples of flipping channels with the group as you go along and ask relevant questions that helps boost the dynamics of the group. It fascinates me utterly that the individuals gathered here across the globe can share, learn, and enrich each other.
