Author

Evangelist Joan Charles Paterson

Evangelist Joan Paterson was born and raised in the beautiful island of Grenada. She considers her walk with God and family very much important to her. If she isn't spending time in the garden or with her friends and family, you can almost always find her reading a book. As a woman who was uneducated, she depended on God as her source. With great persistence and determination God delivered her from the bondage of educational slavery in 2011. She had breakthroughs that brought about powerful transformation in her life. It was a wakeup call from the Lord when the spirit of God said to her “this is a new awakening in the spirit and that He (God) will do a new work within her’. It was amazing! There after she felt the pumping of the holy spirit of God to write her vision, so she embraced the opportunity of this once in a life time experience to share her life’s journey in her first published book called a “New Awakening”.

First and foremost, I would like to give praise and thanks to almighty God, the one who reigns supreme, for giving me the wisdom, peace, knowledge, understanding and the inspiration to write this book. To Mrs. Novia John and Miss Stacia Blake, thank you for your support in my quest, may the words of this book revolutionize your lives, as it gave me understanding. To everyone else that provided support in one way or the other, thank you, and to each person; those who will be reading the contents herein, those that are searching for the word, looking for healing, or to them that are discouraged going through life’s trials, may this book bring some encouragement and strength to your hearts, and may it bring you closer to the power of the Almighty.

I also want to say thank you my publisher who will be assisting with the editing, proofreading and the design of this book, surely this book is written because God directedit, through the Holy Spirit, an awakening of His grace, His goodness and mercies upon my life.

I pray that the experiences shared in this book of my life and my encounter with the King of Kings brings great encouragement to all the readers, and strengthens those that are weak, bring healing for those that feel inferior, rejected, or are searching for answers through the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe I am now the woman I was born to be from my experiences and I hope this book can do the same for you!

    Yours Sincerely,

    Evangelist Joan M. Charles-Patterson.

From a victim to a victor

My name is joan m. charles paterson, i originate in the village of Conference in the parish of St. Andrew. I grew up a poor little village girl, in an abusive home with a father who was an alcoholic, and my mom, the sweetest and humblest woman I’ve had the pleasure of knowing, for a short time, passed away at the age of 48, my baby sister was only nine months old at the time of her death. I am indeed very grateful to be alive, I am the second of fourteen children born to Septimus and Matilda Charles.

My father was a hard-working man, a very strict individual who rarely smiled, and was a very difficult man to deal with; we eventually grew up and went our separate ways, he died several years later in 1993 and up to that day I had never understood him. Our recreation was work, performing tasks in the garden, or carrying a tray on our heads selling produce, walking bare-footed on the road, no shoes on the hot pavement. Providing feed for the animals was another of our daily routines. I can’t recall ever getting to school early, even one day. There was also never a day that did we not have to go to garden. While selling produce on the road, we were not entitled to a snack from the earnings.

Growing up as children we had a very tough and miserable life, if my father came in drunk, which he did two or three times a week, we were prepared to run out of the house during the night, regardless what hour it may be. He never knew what it meant to fight for his children’s education, thank God for mother, who in those days ensured we got a little education. I’m guessing it is because of the way my father was brought up, but do you know what, it was no problem for him to get the alcohol. My father barely wanted to buy basic school supplies for us to complete our primary school education; I have never been to secondary school, my involvement was the few hours at school, chores at the garden, and go around selling vegetables. The older ones of us were removed from school at an early are to assist in the garden. I was just about to turn fourteen when I was removed from school.

My mom, who was a wonderful, humble woman, was terribly afraid of my father, all because of his behavior. I recall making my way the police station to make a report against him for ill-treating this innocent woman, always beating her without a cause. His abusive actions drove me into the arms of a man. When I met my husband, he discouraged me from going to make the report, he asked me to stay with him and because my frustration, (I was young and tired), I accepted his proposal. He was 17 years older than I was, however, we got married in 1970, when I was sixteen, with the consent of both of my parents.

After my mother died in 1973; I had to take care of my brothers and sisters. I migrated to Venezuela in April of 1974 to earn money to take care of my younger siblings, four months later my daughter Merryl, and husband joined me, I took up five of my sisters and one brother and we all lived together, so that we could help the younger ones.

My first daughter who grew up in Venezuela, attended school in Valencia and was a smart, bright and intelligent young woman, she passed away in 2014 from the deadly disease, cancer. I really believed God for a miracle but God always has the final say and knows what is best. I promised myself, because of the abusive life I endured as a child, I never wanted my kids to go through that kind of experience. I remember in my early years in growing up, to tell the truth, I really disliked my father, due to the treatment we got at home, especially when he consumed alcohol, once he didn’t consume alcohol, he was okey and remained stable,

In 1976, I accepted the Lord as my personal savior and got baptized in June of that year at the Evangelical Church at San Blas in Venezuela. Although it took me a long time to grow spiritually, the new adaption of the Christian culture after accepting Jesus, taught me how to forgive my father for the way he treated us. He never knew what a father’s love was, but today I am blessed and highly favored in the Lord Jesus Christ, thanks be to Him, I have a loving father that I can relate to.

In 1983 I had a spiritual encounter with God, it was the beginning of a walk by faith, he was changing things around for me in a miraculous way. I wasn’t completely surrendered to God as I am presently, but I knew that He had a plan for my life. Sister Christina, lovely lady, availed herself to go with me to Puerto Cabello to visit the homes of Grenadians in Venezuela and to minister the word of God to them, meanwhile an American pastor gave me two boxes of bibles, both English and Spanish.

I began going to different homes distributing bibles and telling them the good news of Jesus and how much he loves us. While doing his work, something amazing happened in my life, somehow that overwhelming joy began to flow within, I was not able to put what was happening in words, until my pastor Emmedy told me that I was filled with the Holy Spirit.

It happened that the house my family and I occupied as our dwelling home, was also used to facilitate Sunday worship service, to accommodate some of the colleagues who lived in San Blas Valencia; there was an American pastor and his family that was sent to share the word with us. Three persons accepted the Lord as their savior during that ministry, but only two of them were ready for baptism. As members of the Free Evangelical Church in San Blas, Valencia, we got along very well and I grew to love them a whole lot; the most difficult time came when we had to say goodbye to the church because we were returning to Grenada permanently. My husband came back to Grenada six months before the kids and I because he didn’t want to stay in Venezuela any longer.

We had such a wonderful relationship with the brethren and sistren in Venezuela, there was this family unity among us in the Church, that’s where I was born again in the Spirit, it was always filled with love, and peace. They had a wonderful farewell party for us when we were leaving to return home in 1987, they blessed us with all sorts of gifts. Hermana Julia, was the cake lady (Hermana means sister in English) Julia made a lovely chocolate cake for us to travel with, it was a wonderful day, and time, that I will never forget.

When we arrived in Grenada, the taxi brought us to Mardi Gras, St. Paul’s, and my husband said to me, that’s where we will be living for the time, I was shocked, but I remained quiet. I said "thank you
