Chapter 1: The world that once was
Before the world fell apart, I was Dr. Maria Alvarez, a respected botanist specializing in plant genetics. I had devoted my life to studying the interactions between plants and their environment, and I believed that the key to saving the planet from ecological collapse lay in the humblest of organisms. My colleagues and I were on the brink of a groundbreaking discovery when everything changed.
It began subtly, with whispers of a mysterious illness spreading across the globe. Governments downplayed its severity, assuring the public that it was under control. But when the food supply chain began to crumble, and once-bustling cities transformed into ghost towns, it was clear that the world was on the brink of collapse.
My once bright and promising future evaporated, and the very soil beneath my feet became barren. For years, I survived by scavenging for canned goods and water in the deserted ruins of nearby towns, always moving, always cautious.
When I looked in the mirror, I no longer recognized the person staring back at me.
