Chapter 1: How It Started—Choosing the 12 Verses for My Journey
I have always been prodded to write a book. I didn’t really feel like I had that much to say. I wasn’t sure if I had anything to contribute that would make a difference to anyone. God has been speaking to me to write about my journey. So, I must try to put it on paper if it brings glory to God. I am going to be writing this book based on my journey through life. I will expand each chapter with a story of one of my life experiences and how clinging to a particular Bible verse and prayer has been the key to making it out the other side with a positive outcome.
As a child, I grew up in a minimally abusive household. We were whipped, verbally ridiculed, and exposed to domestic violence between our parents weekly, sometimes daily. I was the youngest, so I received the least of the physical abuse. I can tell you it had a profound negative effect on my older siblings. I think today they still carry much of the trauma they were subjected to in their youth. Holidays were tainted with threats and whippings. Our annual vacation usually had multiple days where fighting occurred. Nothing was off limits for my dad’s immature temper tantrums and my mom’s compliance in letting it happen.
Each time in my life experiences, I wanted to give up. What gave me strength was knowing these verses from going to church during childhood and young adulthood, as well as reading my Bible in adulthood. I didn’t have a driving force for religion from my parents, friends, or extended family. It was a pure one-on-one relationship (that I established through daily prayer and Bible reading) with Jesus Christ in my life that brought me the strength, perseverance, peace, and security in my life. Today, I do regularly attend church services and read/follow scripture-based messaging to keep learning as much about God’s Word as possible. During all of my trauma, Jesus was there with me. I had no one else but Him to lean on. He held me close and securely. He protected my heart and mind.
Here are the twelve verses that I still regularly apply to my life situations.
Proverbs 3:5-7
Joshua 1:9
1Peter 5:7
Ephesians 4:31-32
Jeremiah 29:11
Deuteronomy 28:12
Philippians 4:4
Psalms 118:24
Psalms 139:14
Proverbs 13:3
Proverbs 16:7
Proverbs 16:9
Take the time to look them up. They are simple yet comprehensive. They are easy to remember. I can speak the words within them and immediately find a comfort I don’t get from a sympathetic ear. I believe I was led to these for my life’s journey. If they help you on yours then I have done my part to lead you closer to our GOD. I hope this book brings you peace, healing, security, harmony, and happiness. GOD BLESS YOU!
