How much longer am I going to go on like this?
It wasn’t the first time that day the thought had occurred to Nick Tremantle, and he knew it wouldn’t be the last. The day wasn’t helping, either. Wednesday had started out cold with no sign of the sun making it through the clouds. The weather the last few days had spoiled him. Lake county had enjoyed unseasonably high temperatures, and this dip was depressing. He’d opened the door from the sunroom to the yard and sighed at the sight of the thick, gray clouds.
Some sunshine would’ve helped.
Except Nick knew he was kidding himself. Nothing was gonna help, not until he made up his mind and did something.
I can’t, not yet. Not while I’m still teaching. I mean, just look what happened...
He shivered. Can’t think about that. All it did was twist his stomach into knots, anyway. It was too late, the damage was done. It still galled him that a moment of indecision had left such a trail of disaster in its wake. Deep down, he knew it was an excuse, just one of many. Hell, if he believed that one, he’d be in his sixties by the time he made a move.
And who’d want me then, huh?
he said aloud to his empty kitchen.
This wasn’t helping. He had things to do, groceries to buy, papers to grade...
Nick drained the last of his coffee, grabbed his keys and exited the house.
North Mary Street was quiet. The only sign of life was the cute guy across the way, cleaning his car. Nick tried his damnedest not to stare, but fuck, his neighbor was gorgeous. Lean, tattoos everywhere, dark skin and beautiful large eyes.
And straight. Don’t forget the wife.
Like Nick could forget. When she was shouting at their dog, Rolo, his wife had a voice that could be heard from over four blocks away.
Nick did his best to ignore Cute Neighbor. He climbed into the car and pulled out his driveway, the tires stirring up the dust. The streets were fairly peaceful for a Wednesday morning. There were only a few days remaining of Spring break, and Nick knew he should be making the most of them. And yet here he was, shopping and working.
He drove to Winn Dixie and got through his list in about fifteen minutes. After exchanging the usual pleasantries with Betty at the checkout, Nick pushed the cart out to his car, put the bags into the back and deposited the cart in the space allocated. He checked his fuel gauge on the way out, but he had plenty of gas. It was only when he got back onto the main route that Nick decided to go for a drive.
I don’t want to go home.
The thought of that pile of papers sitting on his desk, just waiting for him, filled him with dread. He should’ve done them sooner, he knew that, but like always, he’d put off the boring task as long as possible. So he turned toward Mount Dora and drove that way instead, leaving Eustis behind him. He had no plan in mind, other than a change of scenery. The state of the house depressed him, for one thing. It was hard to look around and not feel sorry for himself. Nick had never been one for having a pity party, though the last ten months had given him more than enough cause for one, that was for sure.
He’d been driving about ten minutes when he spotted the hitchhiker in the hoodie, a backpack slung over his shoulder. The figure was standing by the side of the road, shoulders hunched forward, head low. There was something familiar about him, even at a distance, his features hidden by the dark gray hood that shaded his face. It was only when Nick was within stopping distance that the figure lifted his chin and Nick’s heart started hammering.
It was Alex Nordmann.
Some instinct took over and Nick jammed on the brakes, pulling to a stop just past the young man. He watched Alex approach in the rear mirror, heart still pounding.
Of all the people to be hitchhiking...
Alex leaned forward to peer in the passenger window and his eyes grew large. Mr. Tremantle. I didn’t recognize the car.
I’ve changed it since you last saw it, that’s why. Where are you going, Alex?
Alex’s face fell. Anywhere I can find a job. Things got kinda tough at home, so I figured I’d be better off looking for work someplace else.
Nick did the math swiftly in his head. Alex had to be in his mid-twenties by now. Christ, is it that long since I taught him? That long since he’d watched Alex grow into a handsome young man. Considering the unconscious part Alex had played in Nick’s awakening to his own sexuality, that it should be him standing by the car right then was all too ironic. After all, fourteen years teaching, and Nick had never fantasized about a student, not the way he had about Alex.
A fantasy he’d always known would remain just that, especially since Nick didn’t have the balls to step out of that closet. Not that he would’ve done anything while Alex was his student. There were some lines you just didn’t cross.
I’m sorry to hear things are tough. How long have you been looking for work?
Couple months. It just got to the point where I couldn’t stay there anymore.
There was a haunted expression on Alex’s face that tore at Nick’s insides.
Do it. Do it.
"You want to come back with me for some lunch? Maybe I can give you some ideas,
