For me, throwing punches in a bar and dodging attacks of sharp teeth was nothing new. Since teaming up with the Bluesman Fuller, I had learned of vicious monsters, unbelievable magic, and even parallel universes. I had crossed miles upon miles, slept in horrid motels, and frequented the sleaziest of bars — all in an effort to rid this world of the mayhem that accompanied the Bluesman Fuller when he fell here. But throwing punches in a bar and dodging attacks of sharp teeth from a fellow human being? That was a new experience.
Fuller sat on the stage playing a rollicking version of Gimme Back My Wig
by Hound Dog Taylor, and at first, I thought perhaps one of his spells had gone awry. A simple shake of his head informed me that he had not laced any of the music with his magic. Looked like this guy coming at me was simply drunk.
Or stupid.
Fighting a man proved to be more difficult than fighting monsters. I only had to kill monsters. This guy, I had to be careful with. I had to control my punches so that they would stop him but not determinately harm him.
Looking back on it, all these years later, I now know I would have been better off taking a dive, letting this guy think he had gotten the best of me. Instead, I used all my moves to evade his attacks which led him to the desperate act of trying to bite me which led me to sidestep him, knee him in the gut, and pummel the back of his head until the bartender pointed a shotgun my way.
You hit him one more time, son, and we’ll be digging your grave tonight.
I’m not the one pretending to be Mike Tyson.
Yeah, but you’re the one I’m pointing the shotgun at.
Needless to say, I didn’t hit the guy again. And because of that incident, Fuller and I found ourselves walking back to
