To honor Him and serve others
ONE
His Holiness will see you now.
Monsignor Conti announced to the seated man in the ornate hallway of the Apostolic Palace.
Bishop Joseph Paulson struggled to his feet and followed the Pope’s personal secretary into the next room. The monsignor walked slowly in consideration of the bishop’s slow gate, aided by his cane. One month ago he had his right hip replaced, the second one, so he was not quite up to speed yet.
The vast room had very high ceilings and was in itself a work of art. On two of the walls were painted brightly colored frescoes of biblical scenes. The ceilings were three-dimensional carvings in goldleaf of lions and lambs and other Christian symbols. This was one of the many rooms in the Apostolic Palace that the renaissance master Raphael had created. Even though he had experienced it before Bishop Paulson was still overwhelmed. The visual masterpiece was a feast for the eyes and even the air smelled sacred.
Bishop Paulson!
The Pope greeted from across the room. You appear to have three legs...why do you still move so slow?
The bishop chuckled at his old friend and smiled. Your Holiness...if I walked too fast you would be jealous of my speed and agility and ask me, ‘Why so fast Bishop? What’s your hurry?’ So I move slow for your benefit.
Both men laughed heartily and as the Bishop tried to kneel and kiss Francis’ hand, the pontiff swiftly pulled him back up and gave him a giant bearhug.
Stop that foolishness Joseph. You know better.
The Pope kissed him on both cheeks warmly and pointed to the red velvet, high back chair next to his. Sit, sit my friend and tell me how you are. The new hip is coming along I see.
The Bishop plopped into the chair with an audible grunt.
Yes the hip is doing well. It’s mending faster than the first one. Last week I needed the walker, next week...I may start jogging.
The Pope grinned. The day you jog amigo, I will do cartwheels in St. Peters.
The two laughed loud and free, the sound echoed in the near empty room. They had first met in Rome in 1977, as room neighbors at the St. Regis Hotel. They were both young priest, the pope known then as Jorge Bergoglio was ten years senior to Joseph Paulson. Father Paulson was born and raised in Tempe, Arizona while Father Bergoglio haled from Buenos Aries, Argentina.
It was a sad but exciting time in the Catholic Church as Pope John Paul I, had passed away in his sleep after only one month in the chair of St. Peter. Both priest were unable to attend the ceremony surrounding his election, but now only a month later, both were able to make the journey for the conclave of the next pontiff. That month spent together in Rome and at the Vatican, sharing meals, tours, prayers and fellowship, proved to make a strong foundation for a lifetime friendship. It was only a few years later that they had become as close as brothers and often Jorge called Joseph his little brother.
He was his little brother both by virtue of the ten-year age gap and also in stature. Joseph was quite short, only five foot four inches tall. Although Jorge was a few inches shy of six feet, he still towered over his friend.
