    - START

The air was thick with unease as the car trundled up the long, winding driveway. The gnarled trees, stripped of their leaves, created eerie silhouettes against the fading evening sky. It seemed as though the entire world had sucked in a breath, waiting for the vehicle to reach its destination.

Inside the car, Eleanor clutched the tattered letter in her hand. The elegant handwriting, unmistakably that of her late Aunt Agatha, had beckoned her to Wraithwood Manor. The last will and testament had been clear: Eleanor was to spend one month in the mansion to claim her inheritance. Otherwise, it would all go to a local charity.

It's just a house, Ellie, murmured her younger brother, Thomas, from the driver's seat. But his knuckles whitened around the wheel, betraying his bravado.

As they approached the grand entrance of the mansion, a chill swept over Eleanor. The imposing edifice, though once beautiful, now stood decrepit and forlorn, its windows like vacant eyes staring into her soul.

They parked the car and hesitated for a moment. The massive wooden door groaned in the wind, opening slightly as if inviting them in.

Did you see that? Thomas whispered.

It’s just the wind, Eleanor replied, trying to convince herself more than her brother.

They approached the entrance, and Eleanor placed a trembling hand on the doorknob. Before she could turn it, the door swung inward, revealing the grand hallway bathed in the silvery light of the moon.

The siblings exchanged a glance before stepping inside. They explored the ground floor, their footsteps echoing in the vast, dusty chambers. Everything was covered with white sheets, giving the rooms an eerie feel, like they were full of ghosts.

As midnight approached, Eleanor and Thomas decided to retire for the night, choosing rooms on the second floor. Just as Eleanor was settling into bed, she heard it—a faint whisper, distant and unintelligible, but unmistakably human.

She got up, opened her door, and listened intently. The whispers seemed to be coming from the attic. Curiosity overcoming her fear, she grabbed a candlestick and started up the narrow, creaky steps to the attic.

The whispers grew louder, forming a cacophony of voices, all murmuring, pleading, and sobbing.
