Foreword by Dr Trevor Brignall
This book is written in an easily digestible format that walks the reader through a journey of exploration on a key area of marketing that adds significant value to the profitability of any organisation, large or small. Customer acquisition and, importantly, retention are essential not only to commercial operations but also not-for-profit and membership organisations.
The book will appeal to a wide range of readers, ranging from those on a journey of discovery wishing to learn more about this important topic to the seasoned practitioner seeking a useful checklist.
For centuries, the most powerful stories and impacts have been delivered not through words but pictures and music -from the paintings of prehistoric cavemen to the work of Andy Warhol, the compositions of Mozart to those of Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney. The old adage, a picture paints a thousand words, enables marketers to quickly translate concepts and ideas into images. Using art and artists, the author illustrates how companies infuse their brands with character, individuality, and emotion.
Dr Trevor Brignall
Prologue: The Artist and the Emperor
Once upon a time, an emperor asked an artist to paint the Himalayas on the walls of his palace. The artist, a Zen master, said he would need to live in the Himalayas for three years to do so. The emperor asked:
-Will it take you three years?
The artist replied:
-I ask for the minimum time because I cannot paint them until I become a part of the Himalayas. I need to go there and dissolve in them.
Three years passed, and the artist returned. He painted the wall in three days. The emperor came to see. It was a wonder! He had never seen such beautiful mountains. Even the real Himalayas seemed pale in comparison. He stood for a long time, admiring, and then noticed:
-I see a path here. Where does it lead?
The artist answered:
-We can go and see.
And they left, never to return.
Introduction
In essence, after-sales marketing is the finishing touch on your brand's masterpiece, the detail that can turn a satisfied customer into a loyal brand advocate.
Much like an artist's canvas, the world of marketing is full of endless possibilities and vibrant colors, each hue representing a different approach to connecting with customers. One of this palette's most understated yet potent colors is the art of after-sales.
Just as an artist breathes life into a blank canvas, marketers infuse brands with character, individuality, and emotion. The parallels between marketers and artists are numerous. Both see the world through a unique lens, carefully curating experiences and narratives that evoke emotion and forge connections.
Artists don't merely create a piece of art; they tell a story through it. Similarly, a marketer doesn't just sell a product or service; they narrate the brand's story, values, vision, and the problems it solves.
However, the most compelling stories don't conclude at the point of sale. Much like a captivating novel or a gripping movie, they leave the audience yearning for more. This is where after-sales marketing enters the narrative. It's the epilogue that keeps the customer engaged, extending the
