    AMBER

Amber Mckenzie clutched her brand-new Louis Vuitton handbag as she stepped through the double doors of the country club. Music vibrated through the walls, and she could barely think straight. She maneuvered through the thick crowd and slung the longer strap over her head to keep it out of reach. The last thing she wanted was for some sweaty guy to brush up against it. After all, it wasn’t every Christmas that her dad bought her a new purse, and she didn’t want to take her chances. Part of her regretted bringing the bag to start with. She didn’t know her neighbor, Dustin, would have so many people show up to his party. She knew he was popular in high school, but she could tell his social circle had grown since graduating from university.

She scanned the room to see if she could spot him. Rumor had it, his cousin would be here. After seeing him in a couple of pictures with Dustin online, she already knew he was a sight for sore eyes. But she couldn’t help but wonder how he would act in person. She made it halfway through the crowd when she finally found them. Both of them stood on stage close to the DJ table. Dustin and his cousin Hayden pumped their fists into the air at the start of a new song with a steady beat. The music thumped loudly in her ears and kept time with her heart slamming against her rib cage.

Dustin slid his shirt off his head, and Hayden did the same. She ignored Dustin. She’d already seen him shirtless before and was not impressed. Instead, she squinted extra hard and stepped past a few girls to get a better glimpse at Hayden. She’d already considered most of her options in Athens, Tennessee, and they were pretty limited when it came to attractive men. The dark lighting made it difficult to see in more detail, but as a strobe light flashed across him, it was clear he had the distinct ripples of a six pack. Her breath caught in her throat. She wanted to open her mouth to get their attention, but she was too late. They both fell onto the sea of people flat on their backs and began surfing the crowd.

She spotted him hovering over the crowd toward the exit. She pushed her way through several people before she arrived in front of the open door. Her eyes grew wide as he slid down from the group of people holding him and collapsed directly into her embrace.

She stumbled backward at the sudden impact. His entire body leaned against her, and she found it difficult to stand. Her barbie-blond hair hung over her eyes, blocking her vision. She began to stumble to the ground, but he caught her before she did. He steadied her with his other hand until she regained her balance.

They both sauntered into the hall to catch their breath.

I’m sorry. I swear...I’m not following you around. She cringed internally after the words poured out of her mouth. Would he think she was weird now?

He shot her a confident smile. That’s fine by me.

    Huh?

There’s a ton of people here. I’m sure it was just a trick of fate that I landed where I did.
