Dryad's Blossom - Laura Greenwood
One
Lila
A light breeze played with the strands of hair that had already managed to escape the tight braid I'd put it in. I reached up to fiddle with one of them, trying to push it back into place but only managing to make it worse in the process. I hoped my messy hair wouldn't make a bad impression on my new hosts.
I turned the corner and sucked in a breath at the sight of the orchard sprawling out in front of me. I thought I was prepared for it after working in the orchards at Grower's Cove, but there was something about this one that just seemed so much more beautiful. It was easy to see the influence of the nymphs and dryads on the Purple Oasis orchard. While most of the trees were young, they were well-tended to and alive. That was more than what could be said for most places that survived the apocalypse.
My heart leapt in response. Nothing would fill the magic within me like being around a healthy cherry blossom tree, but it had been so long since that had been the case that I no longer remembered what it felt like. The vibrancy of the plant life in Purple Oasis was enough to give me a small boost though, perhaps even more than at Grower's Cove. Everything was so stiff and regimented there that even though everything was supposed to be about nature, nothing was allowed to grow free or wild. That didn't suit plants, and it didn't suit those who tended to them either.
I spotted a group of nymphs ambling at the top of the field, clearly waiting for something. That had to be where the new workers from Grower's Cove were gathering which meant that was where I was supposed to be too. I hadn't thought to ask for more specific instructions when I left the nymph and dryad settlement.
Slightly nervous, I jogged up to them and waved, recognising some faces here and there. At least I knew some people already.
Hi, are you all waiting for Ford as well?
I asked, not wanting to assume anything and end up making a fool of myself in the process.
A few of them nodded and I joined in, trying to get my nerves settled for what could be considered a new job. In the old world, there'd have been emails and cover letters and interviews with dusty people with no sense of what the current job market was really like. But here, I'd put my name on a list and that was it.
Well, I was sure there was more to it than that. But I wasn't under any illusions that Mother Nature had sent me here because of my skills. In all likelihood, she'd sent me here because I was useless to her and she didn't mind sending people like that to other hubs.
I looked around, taking in the sight of the fields around Purple Oasis. I heard lots about this place but none of the stories lived up to reality. There were plenty of workers around tending to crops with laughter and chatter in abundance. I saw people carrying construction materials and groups of scouts with animal familiars leaving the oasis. It felt different to anywhere else I'd been since the apocalypse. And it was more than just appearances too, I could feel it in the air. I could feel it in my magic.
It was a busy place in a very different way than Grower's Cove. It felt... vibrant, like a large village turning into a city.
Lila?
I turned at the sound of my name, smiling when I recognised Eloise.
Hey.
I waved awkwardly. I didn't expect to see you here. Aren't you a dandelion dryad?
