Chapter 1 : Why you should try off-grid living
Everyone should give it a try, even if just for a few minutes. Off-grid life will give you the necessary skills for surviving any
calamity that may occur. Your usual way of getting resources and utilities will be jeopardized. You’ll also know how to prepare for calamities, such as the recent epidemic that engulfed the globe and claimed millions of lives. Here are some advantages to being off the grid for a while:
It’s Comforting:
First and foremost, living off the grid is really satisfying. You consume creatures that you have hunted, and you raise the vegetables that you eat. Being self-sufficient has an uplifting effect. When you have an issue, you don’t just pick up the phone and call someone to come solve it. You must manage it on your own. You build things with your own two hands and from scratch. If it isn’t motivating, I don’t know what is. Living off the grid is intellectually engaging and will make you feel better about yourself. From cultivating crops and preserving food to woodworking and producing your own electricity,
Better for the Environment:
If being self-sufficient and handy doesn’t make you feel empowered, then protecting the environment will. Many survivalists and those who live off the grid have a far lower carbon footprint than others. They have smaller dwellings and
generate less garbage. They also often employ solar panels or other types of renewable energy, and recycling is highly widespread due to the nature of their lifestyle.
A Healthier Way of Life:
The fact is that living off the grid helps more than just nature. When you live in the woods, you are not confined to a sedentary lifestyle for long periods of time. You must go out and make an attempt to meet your fundamental necessities. This active lifestyle benefits your health in more ways than you realize. You walk instead of taking the bus or driving. You are not continually subjected to the city’s pollution and noise. Not to mention that you eat better.
Many survivalists eat what they hunt and grow their own vegetables and fruits. Needless to say, eating healthy food involves knowing precisely what went into creating it. When you live off the grid, there are no fast-food restaurants.
These characteristics, when combined, result in people following this lifestyle suffering from fewer ailments such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and others.
Reduced Anxiety:
Let’s face it, living in the city is as hectic as it gets. Most individuals suffer from stress and anxiety as a result of the
hustle and bustle of daily life and having to compete with virtual strangers on a regular basis. Living off the grid is a lot easier than that. You are not working in a corporate environment where everyone is out to take advantage of you. You aren’t always competing and feeling stressed because you compare yourself to others. It’s just you and nature, and nature doesn’t compete. Furthermore, living off the grid has much lower costs. You don’t have to pay as much on energy bills or spend as much on food and transportation as you would in the city. This relieves you of a burden and significantly decreases stress and worry in your life. You have control over your schedule and your life, which means you can alter whatever you don’t like. Living in the city does not provide this luxury.
What You’ll Need to Live Off-Grid
Now that you understand why you should live off the grid, it’s time to look at what it takes to really do so. You can’t just wake up one day and decide to travel into the bush and survive with whatever supplies you have on hand. This is a huge endeavor that should not be approached lightly. As a result, there are certain fundamentals you’ll need to learn before proceeding, so that the transition from your previous
lifestyle to this one goes as smoothly as possible.
Location/Land
This is likely the most difficult of the fundamental criteria for living off the grid. Finding a spot may be difficult where you reside, but since you’ll be leaving the city anyway, you may go farther in quest of a suitable area for your refuge. If you happen to own property or land in a remote region, you’re in luck, and this stage will be substantially simpler. We’ll go through land and shelter possibilities in more detail later, but in general, you need to locate property in a calm region where
you won’t be hindered by construction rules and zoning laws—something you can expect to find to some degree practically everywhere. If you have the money, we strongly advise you to acquire a piece of land like that, since it will be considerably cheaper and incur fewer taxes than buying property in a city or a more metropolitan location.
Shelter
Finding the place or property on which to build your homestead is just the first step. Then there’s the shelter. Is it feasible to spend the night in a tent under a blanket of stars? It certainly is, but it is not a long-term answer and is better suited for a brief holiday than a lifetime. If you’re serious about making this move, you’ll need a shelter that protects you from nature as well as animals and other dangers in the outdoors.
The area will most likely dictate the style of shelter, with possibilities ranging from old shipping containers to log cabins or even a modest home.
Water and food
Then there’s food and water. Food is significantly simpler to
maintain than water, but both must be considered if you’re still shopping for a piece of land to buy. You’ll have struck gold if you can identify a spot with a nearby water supply. When it comes to living off the grid, clean drinking water is essential. So, while looking for a good place, seek out nearby rivers, lakes, water wells, or any other natural water supply that you will be able to use after you have settled down.
Another consideration is the accessibility of the water and how simple it will be for you to transport it. A plot of land on a cliff overlooking a lake isn’t ideal since you’ll have to hike down with jugs or containers and then back up the hill, which will rapidly weary even the most ardent athletes.
As previously said, food is a less difficult matter. If the area you’ve chosen is suited for producing vegetables and fruit, you should be able to produce the greens you normally eat, depending on the soil type. This is important to remember since you will not have access to food shops in the wilderness. Some individuals who live off the grid do not devote time, energy, or money to producing a garden full of fruits and vegetables. Instead, they make use of the natural resources available to them, picking berries, nuts, and other plants that may be utilized as a healthy food source. This is not ideal since reliance on natural food sources might be hazardous, resulting in poisoning or intoxication.
If you intend on raising animals, you can generate meat and eggs on your farm, which isn’t
