OFF-GRID PROJECTS - Jimson Lewis
Introduction
Since you've picked up this book and decided to read it, you are interested in off-grid living and self-sufficiency. You may want to adopt an unburdened, sustainable lifestyle, but you don't know where to begin. This guide will give you a step-by-step blueprint for moving off the grid and offer a look at what kinds of things it will entail. By the time you’re done reading this book, you will have a clear understanding of what is required to achieve your goals.
What Is Off-Grid Living?
For anyone new to this topic, let's define what off-grid living means. If you live off the grid, you are engaging in an autonomous lifestyle where you don't rely on utilities provided by power, water, or gas company. You can either find alternative methods of gaining access to these things or choose to live without them.
What Is Self-Sufficiency?
A key component to living off the grid is becoming self-sufficient. This means you partake in sustainable living, reliably producing your own renewable resources to meet your daily needs for survival. To do this, you must have the ability to generate more resources than you consume.
Reasons to Move Off-Grid
Living off the grid and adopting a self-sufficient lifestyle is becoming increasingly popular as people feel burned out from the grind of modern society. Working a typical 9-5 job isn't always ideal, especially if you find yourself stuck in a career you hate. The feeling of being trapped in a rut only compounds over time, as it seems increasingly likely that you'll keep doing the same thing until the day you die. However, you're forced to clock in and suffer through the endless monotony to make enough money to pay for the things that keep you alive, like food, water, and energy.
Finding an alternative to this might be exactly what you need to reignite the sense of satisfaction you get in life. By moving off the grid, you can become the master of your own domain by being the only one responsible for providing for your needs without depending on outside parties. It can be incredibly liberating not to be accountable to a long list of outside entities that demand your money and attention. When you are directly producing everything necessary to survive, you will feel more gratified to know you're thriving on the fruits of your own labor.
There are other reasons you might want to move off the grid. By investing in this lifestyle, you will continuously reap the benefits in the future, as it can significantly cut down on living expenses. Once your off-grid homestead is up and running, you won't have to constantly buy food or pay for water and power. Your biggest expenses will be the time and effort you put in. This is why achieving self-sustainability is such an attractive option to anyone who prefers living a simple life.
If you love spending time outdoors and coexisting with nature, off-grid living is a great way to do more of those things. Your job will be to take care of your homestead, and you'll get to breathe fresh air as you work under the bright blue sky and shining sun. Your backyard is the untamed wilds all around you, and your neighbors are the animals that spend their day scampering through the woods. Instead of a pool, you might have a babbling brook or an undulating pond where you can fish and swim to your heart's content. Every time you step out your front door, you will be a pioneer, exploring a part of the Earth that few get the opportunity to ever see.
A growing portion of those who go off-grid does so because they are called doomsday preppers
They believe that the world is headed for a major catastrophe, resulting in massive societal upheaval. Developing a sustainable, self-sufficient homestead in isolation is a way to prepare for the chaos that will ensue when the current system falls apart, leaving the population in a desperate fight to find a way to survive. However, they will already have everything they need, avoiding the trials and tribulations that the majority of humanity will experience as they adjust to the new status quo.
Some people will opt for off-grid living because they simply prefer being alone. Getting away from the throngs of scurrying people that litter every city and town is a relief to them. The peace, quiet, and solitude gained from this kind of lifestyle allow them to indulge in the things they enjoy without getting bombarded with unwanted distractions. Often, your nearest neighbor will be miles away, leaving you free to do whatever you want. You won't have to worry about bothering others or them bothering you.
The Path to Success
The biggest hurdle to moving off the grid is not knowing how to go about severing yourself from your current life and establishing a homestead where you can build a self-sufficient lifestyle. It can seem like a daunting task, especially because there are so many factors you need to consider before you can make the transition. It isn't easy to uproot yourself and completely change the way you live, so it's understandable to have some hesitation about it. However, don't allow fear to stop you from pursuing something you truly desire. If you really want to make the leap to off-grid living, the only thing that can stand in your way is you.
Fortunately, living off-grid and becoming self-sufficient has a long history of proven success. Going as far back as our ancient ancestors, people have been able to flourish after adopting a back to the land
lifestyle. During the Roman Era, the majority of citizens outside cities were rural farmers who established sustainable, self-sufficient homesteads. Throughout the early nineteenth century, the philosophy of agrarianism took root across Europe and the United States, with founding father Thomas Jefferson being a particularly notable example of someone who touted the benefits of disconnecting from urban, capitalist life.
In the days of Westward Expansion in America, people tackling the challenges of the frontiers often became homesteaders by necessity. There were no cities, towns, or support systems in place for them to rely on, so they had to ensure they were able to produce the resources they needed to subsist in the wild, brutal lands far beyond civilization. Because of their success, the United States was eventually able to spread from coast to coast. If nothing else, people throughout history have shown that while society might drastically change, the basic principles of what you need to become self-sufficient remain the same.
A Respected Lifestyle
Some of the world's best and brightest have often spoken about the respect they have for homesteading traditions. In a letter to Chief Justice John Jay on August 23, 1985, Thomas Jefferson wrote, Cultivators of the Earth are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independent, the most virtuous, and they are tied to their country and wedded to its liberty and interests by the most lasting bonds.
He knew that anyone able to care for their needs entirely without the help of anyone else was someone who could not be threatened or coerced into conformity. It takes a stern constitution, self-discipline, and motivation to become self-sufficient.
Henry David Thoreau, a famous poet, philosopher, and naturalist, once said, I make myself rich by making I want few.
Like those who choose to live off the grid, he understood that minimalism and cutting back on indulgences was the way to achieve real prosperity—not necessarily financial wealth, but a richness of the soul. When the only wants you to have are to fulfill your basic needs, you can devote more of your being to seeking happiness and finding a path to contentment that doesn't involve material things.
Cutting back on the superfluity around you can help focus your attention on the things in life that really matter. Getting back to a simpler way of living and reconnecting with the natural world is just as spiritually transformative as it is to the day-to-day aspects of your life. The way you currently live is most likely typical for today's world, holding a soul-crushing job that barely pays you =enough to sustain a meager, unfulfilling existence. Moving off the grid and becoming self-sufficient can bring back meaning to your life. You'll no longer have to suffer just to remain in the rat race—instead, you will be thriving in your own little slice of paradise, answerable to no one but yourself.
Chapter 1
The Basics of Off-Grid Living
Moving off the grid is simple in concept but much more complicated in execution. It's imperative that you don't try to undertake an off-grid lifestyle without putting together a detailed plan to guide you along the way. This isn't the kind of thing you want to throw together as you go—there is too much at stake that can go wrong if you haven't properly prepared everything beforehand.
Make Sure You Want to Do This
Now is the time to do some self-reflection to make an honest judgment about whether you truly want to
