A. W. Tozer

Aiden Wilson Tozer (April 21, 1897 – May 12, 1963) was an American Christian pastor, author, magazine editor, and spiritual mentor. For his accomplishments, he received honorary doctorates from Wheaton and Houghton colleges.

Early life

Tozer hailed from a tiny farming community in western La Jose, Pennsylvania. He was converted to Christianity as a teenager in Akron, Ohio: While on his way home from work at a tire company, he overheard a street preacher say, If you don't know how to be saved ... just call on God, saying, 'Lord, be merciful to me a sinner.' Upon returning home, he climbed into the attic and heeded the preacher's advice.

Pastorate

In 1919, five years after his conversion and without formal education in Christian theology, Tozer accepted an offer to serve as pastor of his first church. That began 44 years of ministry associated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA), a Protestant Evangelical denomination, 33 of them serving as a pastor in several different congregations (his first, a small storefront church in Nutter Fort, West Virginia). Later, he served thirty years (1928 to 1959) as the pastor of Southside Alliance Church in Chicago; the final years of his life he spent as pastor of Avenue Road Church in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Observing contemporary Christian living, Tozer felt that the church was on a dangerous course toward compromising with worldly concerns.

Born into poverty, Tozer was self-educated and taught himself what he missed in high school and university.

Authorship

Tozer began writing in 1931 for the denominational magazine of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, Alliance Weekly (now Alliance Life), which became the platform from which his writing career emerged. He later wrote the monthly column There’s Truth in It (1936–37) and A Word in Season (1944–46). In May 1950, he became the editor of the Alliance Weekly, a position he filled until his death in 1963.

At the urging of David W. Fant, publications secretary of the C&MA, Tozer wrote biographies of A. B. Simpson (1943) and Robert A. Jaffray (1947). It was the publication of his third book, The Pursuit of God (1948), that made Tozer a household name among evangelicals In addition to the 12 books he published in his lifetime, more than 40 other books have been compiled from his magazine features, editorials, and transcribed sermons.

During his lifetime, Tozer’s works were published by Christian Publications, Inc., the denominational press operated by the C&MA. The publishing house declared bankruptcy in 2006 and was purchased by WingSpread Publishers of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. In November 2013, Moody Publishers acquired Wingspread from parent company Zur Ltd., a transaction that included more than 60 Tozer books and pamphlets.[9] Some of Tozer’s works are now in the public domain and have been issued by multiple publishers.

Personal life

Tozer had seven children, six sons and a daughter.[10] Living a simple and non-materialistic lifestyle, he and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, never owned a car, preferring bus and train travel. Even after becoming a well-known Christian author, Tozer signed away much of his royalties to those who were in need.

Tozer's work, however, led him to neglect his family. His biographer, James L. Snyder, notes,

The scope of Tozer’s ministry militated against a wholesome family life. Speaking engagements meant that he was away more than he was home. When he was actually in the house, he was in his bedroom study reading or writing.

Death and legacy

Tozer died on May 13, 1963, after suffering a heart attack. He was buried in Chicago, and later the family had his remains reinterred at Ellet Cemetery, Akron, Ohio. A simple marker reads: A. W. Tozer—A Man of God. The Alliance Weekly ran a memorial issue with numerous tributes and excerpts. The same issue also featured God’s Greatest Gift to Man, a transcription of his final sermon. A few months prior to his death, Tozer had submitted the manuscript to The Christian Book of Mystical Verse, which was released in 1964 as his final book. His official publisher, Christian Publications, released many titles after his death, based on his magazine articles and sermon transcriptions. These continue in print with Moody Publishers. Several other publishers have released his public domain works.

In 2000, The Pursuit of God was named to Christianity Today’s list of 100 Books of the Century. In 2006, Knowledge of the Holy was named in The Top 50 Books That Have Shaped Evangelicals. Contemporary Christian music artist Lauren Barlow of BarlowGirl later published a compilation of stories told by 59 artists, writers, and leaders about A.W. Tozer’s personal inspiration.

True Story – Ambassador Monday O. Ogbe : My Encounter with The Lord Jesus Christ in London Saturday, 5am, 22nd of April 2006

I was born into a Christian family, have been a Christian, busy going to church, attending activities and serving as best I could until this encounter that turned my life around. On the 16th of March 2006, I was pacing up and down the hospital hallway in London as my wife had already been in labor for three days. The doctors finally concluded that if she did not have the baby naturally by morning, she would have to undergo a caesarean section. Unknown to us, my mother in law had already seen in a vision that she might not make it through this delivery. Thank God for godly mothers-in-law. Of course, my wife and I did not know about this.

It was during this pacing up and down that I received a strong impression upon my mind to initiate a forty (40) day fast beginning the next day, which was the 17th of March 2006. I was alarmed because I had never carried out a forty-day fast before. This is how you distinguish the fleshy thoughts and thoughts impressed upon you from our heart to our mind by the Holy Spirit in us. He will tell you to do something scriptural that you will not naturally succumb to. I began a conversation with the spontaneous thought lighting upon my mind, thought in response to thought impressions, I then made a requisite to know what I would be praying about for forty days.

Next instruct was that I should pick a jotter and a pen and I began to write right there in the hospital ward the impressions I was receiving. Rather than pray for my wife, I found out the prayer points coming to my mind were on pastors, the churches, unity in the body and all. It was then I asked God, if I were to carry out this task, I would want to see Him before this 40 days fasting ends. There was no response I believe now because the condition for Him manifesting was going to depend on my obedience to the first instruction to fast 40 days.

A point to note here before I continue the story is that God will not take the next move beyond your last point of obedience. If He instructs you to do something, you don't do it, He shuts down until you get back to the last point of disobedience and obey. Read Jonah's account. Jonah ran in the opposite direction to God's assignment. Through the storms, as long as Jonah was in disobedience, God never spoke, until Jonah, after his Futile attempt to commit suicide failed, He cried out to God.

Jonah 2:1-10

1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly.

2 And he said: I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.

3 For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.

4 Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’

5 The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head.

6 I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God.

7 "When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple.

8 "Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy.

9 But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD."

10 So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

A Word For Someone

"Listen dear daughter and son of the living, loving God. God is loving and merciful but God also plays hard rock solid football. Do you want to engage Him in a nasty football match?  Don't even contemplate it. You will end up with swollen limb. Even at that, He loves you and continues to love you and me with an everlasting love. You carry His Spirit within You. You were created in His image and likeness.

You are His pet project, He is zealous for you even when you are deep, deep and deep in sin, He looks at you with pity, exploring, orchestrating circumstances and situation that will lead you back to His loving alms. You are not your own, you have been procured with a price, you are heed in Christ, in God. You are the apple of His eyes, you are royalty, you are a priest unto Him, you are special. He says if you can consider how bright the stars are, you are brighter than the stars of heaven. He says no single hair drops from your head that he does not know. He counts them and knows their number. "

Luke 12:4-7

4 "And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!

6 "Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God.

7 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Now the encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ continues

Behold, on the 22nd of April 2006, three days to the end of the forty-day fast at exactly 5 am in the morning, God kept His part of the bargain.  I was half awake when this Being, in human form, with His hands folded behind His back, bent forward slightly, looking at me on the floor, walked gently, one step at a time, not in a hurry, walked towards me into the lounge through the window area. I could make out His form but could not see His face clearly.

You know the type of dressing Jesus dresses in the middle eastern films that we watch. Immediately He came near me, the area around my feet where He was standing began to vibrate with so much force as if it never existed, more like the area just dematerialized so to speak. As He moved towards my chest, neck and head area, same thing happened and He kept going back and forth. Every area He left recombined again as before and the process continues as before.  There were no words to describe the raw power of that experience; I lost track of time and I became afraid and began to beg that He should end and He should tell me what he wanted me to do for Him while rolling uncontrollably on the floor. That was my encounter with the manifest power of our heavenly Father.

After that trance experience, I began to see different vision of the body of Christ. On one occasion, in the dream, the Lord Jesus Christ walked in, His body was all disjointed but connected with tiny skin ligaments. Each of the parts was a church ministry. I could make out ministries I was familiar with. The connections between the body parts were not firm. I now understand that the church institutions or ministries as we know them today, are dividing His body, the individual members of His church making up His body because of pride, petty ego and all the lust that the flesh presents. Manifesting as Inter church competition, leadership struggle, diversion of members, running down other ministries, fight going on between church members, leadership stealing and living flamboyant lifestyle that does not reflect the living standard of members and the list goes on. If you are such, depart from iniquity, because our God is a consuming fire and remember the sin of Balaam who for monetary lust, misrepresented God and handed Gods blessed children unto satan through evil counsel to the adversary.

I now asked the Lord where I was to fit in this lightly connected disjointed body of His. He told me to look for churches that make disciples of men and that I should not be moved by numbers.

The rest is History. I now realized my confidence in Him was built up after the encounter, I now had a sense of purpose and mission. All the assignment God gave me in subsequent dreams were consistent with this first assignment. There has been no controversy at all. I do sometimes derail, but He lovingly leads me back and sometimes with bruises to show for disobedience. The power and presence of the Holy Spirit has enabled me to accomplish things that I would naturally not be able to in reaching out to specific area of assignment. God fills us with His Holy Spirit to equip us for ministry. Never take on any task for God without the divine enablement and assignment.

This revelation gave me the confidence and assurance that God is available and more than desirous to engage us in conversation, if we are will to tune in to His frequency and ask from Him in faith. He speaks through trance (open visions) as in this case, through dreams, through image impressions, spontaneous thought that lights upon our minds, through circumstances we face, people we meet, ordained men and women of God, through children, through silence and through the word of God. It is critical to note that the inner witness and the word of God has to agree with what we have seen, heard or impressed on our mind. Satan and demonic spirit also speak, impress upon our minds as well. Jesus has alerted us on this in :-

John 10:27

27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

Assignment 1

Have you had an encounter with your Heavenly Father like the one I just recounted? If you haven't, I encourage you to ask for one. Not for show but that you desire to build a stronger relationship with Him than you have right now. Start at the point you are at. Are you missing the mark, start from there. Remember the prodigal son, the father welcomed him despite the sin. That is the father’s heart. Sometimes, we get into a mess because we do not sense God in our lives. He is waiting, waiting to engage you and me.

Stop right now and pray asking him to reveal Himself to you, I mean a tangible manifestation. Not some useless encounters that you just forget within days. Every time I recall the above experience, it is as fresh as ever. It is crafted into my DNA forever. Ask Him to reveal Himself to a love one, a wife, a husband, a partner etc and believe it. See what happens. God wants to be believed, he yearns to be believed. Our faith says I believe you and counting on you to do what you want to do.

Now apart the series of healing, deliverance and restoration I personally experienced, the following several events fueled my anger into this minister -  My mum died at age 44 of high blood pressure – My eldest sister died at 44 of breast cancer and my dad at age 77 of prostate cancer. Engagement with the message of Unity to the Churches: We engage with different denomination urging them to engage with one another

Annual Prayer and Fasting: Every year, we dedicate 40 days as instructed by the Lord between March 17thto April 26thto intercede for the Church and Leadership with the core theme of unity, revival and discipleship

We have published over 65 discipleship books authored by us. We have also published for other Christian authors over 100 titles and distributed to 66 countries

We have created by ourselves, collated from other five-fold ministries gifts in different denominations and circulated from our website over 2 million Christian contents to equip the saints in the nations

We have created and automated 40 days’ discipleship process with Jesus on our website at Otakada.org with hundreds of visitors from all around the world gaining access to the portal.

We are counseling Christians from around the world who come in contact with us on our website and through other ministry engagement with other church denominations as God brings healing, deliverance and restoration to His people both in their spirit, soul and body.

Prophetic Action as led by the Holy Spirit:We carry out prophetic actions as the Holy Spirit leads dedicating the land to the Lord where we function.
