    Introduction

    Folk theatre, as a mode of communication, is a composite art form in India, with a fusion of elements from music, dance, pantomime, versification, epic, and cultural performances embedded in local areas. Himachal Pradesh, known as the land of deities, incorporates folk performances into every festival, fair ceremony, or cultural occasion, encompassing dancing, singing, and dramatics. It is worth mentioning that different theatrical forms practiced in Himachal Pradesh include Karyala, Bhagat, Banthara, Haran, Barlaj, etc.

    Folk theatre is a powerful tool of communication and dissemination in rural areas, conveying the right message to the local people. However, with the passage of time, the dimension of folk theatre has changed and it is gradually becoming obsolete. It is pertinent to mention here that folk theatre is a very old cultural activity that signifies the rituals, heritage, and customs of the areas, based on legends, folklore, the past, beliefs, culture, traditions, conduct, etc. Undeniably, the 21st century has witnessed new technological means of communication through electronic devices. However, nobody can underestimate the hidden potential of folk theatre. This ancient form of communication remains an acknowledged tool in rural areas, where it continues to touch the constant sentiments and emotions of rural people.

    Folk theatre is an enchanting and dynamic folk art that reflects the cultural heritage and traditions of a society. It has a rich history and serves as a means of communication, entertainment, and cultural expression. By combining elements of music, dance, storytelling, and drama, folk theatre creates a captivating experience that resonates with audiences.
