I’ve come to the conclusion that there are only two types of people who enjoy Monday morning staff meetings: the facilitators and the kiss-asses who want to be facilitators. I don’t fall into either of these categories, but here I sit, bored out of my mind in the Monday morning staff meeting, pretending to pay attention to the accounting department’s presentation about lackluster participation in the last subscription drive the paper ran.

I have an idea! Let’s write interesting articles people want to read, about topics that matter to them. Then we would sell lots more papers and online subscriptions! But no one wants to hear from the new girl. I’m not sure they even know my name.

Well, they know my name by my ringtone, Roxanne by The Police. Subtle? No, but at least I always know when my phone is ringing. Sorry, boss. I wince, swiping to send the call to voicemail and putting my phone on silent. Some of my coworkers glare at me like I just committed the ultimate sin, while others just smirk.

My boss, Mr. Jamieson, looks around the room. Alright. What’s everyone working on this week? While he’s inundated with topics from each of the reporters, my phone lights up with a text message. A grin spreads across my face as I read it.

I think I have my own little version of Deep Throat here, sir, I blurt out.

This is a small Christian community, Miss Harris, Mr. Jamieson’s secretary starts. I don’t think you’ll find much interest in pornographic movies in Dalton.

Now I’m the one to look at her like she has three heads. "First, Jackie, it’s Ms. Harris. Second, it doesn’t matter how small or religious a community is, everyone is interested in sex. Good thing, too, or no one would be alive, right? You know, survival of our species and everything? And third, I was talking about a confidential informant, not porn! Jeez, don’t you remember Watergate? I thought that was your era."

What are you talking about, Harris? Mr. Jamieson asks, ignoring the death stare I’m receiving from Jackie.

I received another message from someone claiming to have information on possible illegal activities and a cover-up at a local business. What do we know about The Double Down Fitness Club? I ask the room.

Oh, that stuff again? Jackie exclaims. Those rumors have been going on for months, but decent people ignore them.

Mr. Jamieson says, What Jackie means is that you really need to be careful with what you believe, Harris. I know you’re new to our little hamlet here, so you may not know the history. The Michaels family has been a pillar of our community for years. I knew James and Louise personally. Salt of the Earth type people. The world lost two good ones in that car crash.

Amen, Jackie agrees. Vin Michaels is a well-respected business owner, married to a doctor, for heaven’s sake. Julia grew up here in Dalton as well. And Van, well, that poor dear has been through enough, I would think. He’s a celebrated veteran who experienced a difficult time adjusting to life after his service to our country. He has a family of his own. I think it’s shameful to even consider those boys doing something nefarious.
