Carly

Icheck my hair and lip gloss in the mirror before I run out to catch my ride to work. Now that the bruises have faded, I don’t have to wear much makeup, but I still do on certain days. When I get to the car, I see Dr. Sinclair in the front passenger seat going over her notes from yesterday’s patients.

I duck my head to see who’s driving us today, and my panties nearly fall off by themselves when I see Axl. I’m surrounded by gorgeous, muscle-bound men at The Double Down Fitness Club, but Axl is the one who melts my heart.

I climb into the backseat, and he looks at me in the rearview mirror. I throw him a quick smile, but I’m too nervous to say anything to him. He gives me a silent nod before backing out of the parking space and starting the quick drive to the office.

Good morning, Carly, Dr. Sinclair says. I’m trying to get these notes ready so you can get started on them first thing. I’m sorry I haven’t finished yet. I didn’t get a chance to work on them last night.

There’s a slight blush in her cheeks, so I can guess what she did last night instead of work. If I were married to someone like Vin Michaels, or better yet, someone like Axl, I’d blow off work in favor of blowing him too.

No problem, I tell her. I’ll take care of them whenever you’re done.

The rest of the ten-minute drive passes in silence, but my mind is racing. I keep staring at the back of Axl’s head, wondering what it would be like to run my fingers through his dark, silky hair.

I’ve been working hard to get over the trauma I experienced at the hands of my ex-boyfriend, Charlie Marker, and I’m getting closer to putting myself out there in the dating world. I wish I’d had better sense than to fall so hard for Axl. He has no interest in me, but that doesn’t stop my body from wanting him. I feel like an idiot because he’s all I think about.

He only pays attention to me because it’s his job. He’s supposed to keep Dr. Sinclair safe. I’ve been included in that by default. Basically, he’s our bodyguard. Everyone is afraid Charlie will show up here because he has some vendetta against Vin’s brother. Van and Charlie were friends when they were in the service together. Something terrible happened, turning them against each other, and now they’re sworn enemies.

I don’t know all the circumstances of their falling out, but it must have been awful. Charlie told me he wanted to kill Van, and from what I’ve seen from the Michaels brothers, the feeling is mutual. Charlie used me to get to Dr. Sinclair, so the guys asked me to stay in Dalton for my own safety. Dr. Sinclair took care of me as I healed from the beating Charlie gave me, and The
