    PURPOSE

This is Iris’s world. My world. A world of no colors, where even the trees looked as random and as colorless as tears on a painted face. It was a world that had long since forgotten the vibrant hues of nature, where the sky was a pale gray, and the ground a dusty white. Buildings towered above in shades of monochrome, blending into the dreary landscape.

In this world, stripped of color, I stood out like a beacon of hope. My aura glimmered in a spectrum of colors swirling around me. I was literally a living rainbow. The dull, lifeless landscape around me only served to highlight my vibrancy, and it made me seem like I was not normal, although my mom described me as an extraordinary child. More like a cursed child or a strange one—at least that was what others thought.

Despite my striking appearance, I was famously known as an enigma. I didn’t speak because I couldn’t, nor did I communicate with body language. Instead, I relied on the power of my thoughts, projecting them out into the world for others to hear. It was a rare gift, one that few possessed, and even fewer understood. This made it difficult for me to cope because I was highly misunderstood.

I often dreamt of a better world beyond our own because the world in which I lived was a bleak and oppressive place. The skies were constantly gray, and the landscape was a monochromatic wasteland. The people who lived here had long forgotten what it was like to see colors, to experience the world in all its vibrant glory. We lived in a society of conformity and uniformity, where individuality was punished and creativity was stifled.

It was a place of constant melancholy, where the absence of color had sucked the life out of everything.

You know what old photographs looked like?

Everyone here was literally a walking photograph. People walked the streets in muted shades of gray and black, their faces haggard and resigned. No one spoke, no one laughed, and no one dared to dream. My mom did and that’s why I was born. I am punishment, her punishment for daring to dream. It was as if the entire world was trapped in a perpetual state of mourning, mourning for the colors they had lost.

The government maintained a tight grip on every aspect of our daily life, using fear and intimidation
