I'm as swift and as intelligent as I can be.

You may try and try, but you'll never catch me!

As he travelled across the woodland, Mouse Deer sang his song. He was seeking delectable fruits, roots, and shoots.

He was not terrified, despite his diminutive size. He was well aware that several large creatures wanted to devour him. But first, they had to apprehend him!

Then he heard a noise. Rowr!

Tiger was there!

Good day, Mouse Deer. I was starting to feel hungry. You may now be my lunch."

Mouse Deer was not interested in being eaten. He took a glance around and thought quickly. He saw a pool of mud.

I apologize, Tiger. I'm not going to be your lunch. The King has assigned me to protect his pudding."

Is that his pudding? Tiger said.

Yes. There it is, Mouse Deer said, pointing to a pool of muck. It has the world's best taste. The King does not want it eaten by anybody else.

Tiger lingered over the puddle. I'd like to try the King's pudding.

Oh, no! said Tiger. The King would be furious."

Just one taste, Mouse Deer! The King will never find out.

It's all right, Tiger. But first, let me go far enough so that no one can blame me.

All right, Mouse Deer, you can go now.

Mouse Deer bolted out of sight.

Imagine!Tiger said. It's the King's pudding! He took a large bite.

Phooey! He threw it up.

Yuck! Ugh! Bleck! That isn't pudding. It's mud!

The Tiger dashed into the jungle. Rowr! He finally caught up with Mouse Deer.

You duped me once, Mouse Deer. But now you're going to be my lunch!"

Mouse Deer took a glance around and thought quickly. He saw a wasp nest in a tree.

I apologize, Tiger. I'm not going to be your lunch. The King has tasked me with guarding his drum."

Is that his drum? Tiger said.

Yes. There you have it, Mouse Deer said, pointing to the wasp nest. It has the best sound on the planet. Nobody else is allowed to strike it, according to the King.

I'd like to hit the King's drum, Tiger said.

Oh, no! said Tiger. The King would be furious."

Just one hit, Mouse Deer! The King will never find out.

It's all right, Tiger. But first, let me go far enough so that no one can blame me.

All right, Mouse Deer, you can go now.

Mouse Deer bolted out of sight.

Imagine!Tiger said. King's drum! He reached up and smacked it. Pow.

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz. All of the wasps flew away. They began to sting Tiger.

Ouch! Ooch! Eech! That is not a drum. That's a wasp hive!

Tiger bolted. However, the wasps merely followed him! Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Ouch! Ooch! Eech!

Tiger approached a brook. He dived in with a splash!—and remained submerged for as long as possible. Finally, the wasps left.

Then Tiger appeared. Rowr!He hurried through the jungle till he came upon Mouse Deer.

You duped me once, Mouse Deer. You duped me twice. But now you're going to be my lunch!"

Mouse Deer took a glance around and thought quickly. He saw a cobra! The massive snake was sleeping on the ground.

I apologize, Tiger. I'm not going to be your lunch. The King has assigned me to protect his belt."

Is that his belt? Tiger said.

Yes. There it is, Mouse Deer said, pointing to the cobra. It's the world's best belt. Nobody else is allowed to wear it, according to the King.

I'd like to wear the King's belt, Tiger said.

Oh, Tiger! The King would be furious."

Mouse Deer bolted out of sight.

Imagine!Tiger said. The belt of the King! He began wrapping it around himself.

The cobra woke upsssssssssssss. It didn't sit around waiting for Tiger to finish wrapping. It encircled Tiger and wound itself about him. Then it bit him and squeezed him. Sstt!

Ooh! Ow! Yow! That is not a belt. That's a snake! Help! Deer, Mouse! Help!

But Mouse Deer was a long distance away. And he sang his tune as he walked.

Mouse Deer walked down to the river one day. He wanted to drink something. But he was aware that a Crocodile might be waiting for him underwater.

Mouse Deer had a thought. I wonder if the water is warm, he murmured aloud. I'll stick my leg in and see what happens.

However, Mouse Deer did not put in his leg. Instead, he used his lips to pick up a stick and insert one end.

Chomp! The Crocodile snatched the stick and dragged it underwater.
