Forward
It had been a long couple of months. The heart transplant Carl needed had finally come through. Fourteen of us were getting regular texts throughout the entire process from his wife, Lee. The transplant went reasonably smoothly, and Carl was out of the hospital and back home in three weeks. We all breathed a sigh of relief.
After a week at home, things turned for the worse as Carl caught pneumonia. Carl had to go back to the hospital and was on a ventilator, and soon kidney dialysis equipment followed. Many machines were needed to keep him alive. At times, it seemed like Carl was improving, but there had been too much damage to his lungs.
On Thursday, Lee sent a photo of Carl hooked up to all his life support equipment. His gaze into the camera said it all. We had never seen him so unhappy in our lifetime. It was as if he were saying goodbye to all of us. We all knew he was hurting, and we felt his pain too. It is the same pain one feels seeing a close family member suffer.
On February 12, 2023, Super Bowl LVII featured a matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. A devoted Chiefs fan, Carl watched the game alongside his older brother and son. The Chiefs emerged victorious, bringing some much-needed joy to Carl after enduring a challenging couple of weeks in the hospital.
The following day, Carl made the decision to have the doctors remove him from his life support machines. He recognized that remaining on life support indefinitely would not provide him with a meaningful life. He passed away peacefully on that day. Shortly after, all fourteen of us received a text from Lee, informing us of his passing. That message carried an indescribable weight, as a part of each of us seemed to die with him. Our bond was stronger than that of brothers.
Following Carl's departure, we all realized the importance of documenting our shared childhood adventures and our experiences growing up in a small town in
