About this ebook

The year is 2020. In one moment Lucy is having fun with the guy of her dreams.  Tommy is sexy and only hot for her and they are both melting snow.  The next thing she knows they have been arrested for drinking and being out past the enforced curfew.  In this new dystopian economy, they are both sentenced to life at the Barracks Mills.

This prison is a horror of a manufacturing plant, filled with corrupt management and werewolves.  Can their lives survive the brutality and bloom through the twisted corners of the darkened shower rooms?  Or will Tommy's secret end up exploding in a revenge so gruesome only ghost stories of the revolution will be told amongst campfires?

One thing is for sure Lucy loves Tommy, but can she still love him knowing what the glowing stars on his forearm represent?

Two years had passed since I lost my best friend at Silver Lake Camp.  I thought of her as I sat drinking my long island ice tea and watched the baseball game with my friends in the pub.  The final semester had ended in a successful victory of a GPA average of 4.0.  And all I could think of was that last moment I saw my friend standing by the lake.  There she would be frozen in time.  I’m glad I at least got to remember her beautiful and young.

Tommy snapped me out of the memory by clanging my glass with his beer in a toast that everyone was drinking to.  I don’t know what we were celebrating but I was glad Tommy was here with me.  Who would have thought Tommy would be going to the University beside my College campus and sitting with me here? I thought as I looked over to him and he flashed his brilliant smile like I was the only girl in the world.

Suddenly, breaking news interrupted the game cutting in a strange scene.  We sat watching with mixed gasps going through the crowd and the pub was suddenly stilled by the undiluted violence and real horror show portraying on the screen.

A radical party was attempting to over throw the Canadian Government and the officials retaliated by taking down anyone with brutal force.  The world had changed in this one moment by the sheer power of the Government dominated by the ultra-corporations of the world rumored to control the food supply. But no one realized this was going to change our future.

The world had just changed in Canada; especially in the southern half of Ontario. My new friends and I were living in sublime bliss with big ambitions but without the impending responsibilities of jobs.

Little did we know that the big corporations that ran the world had imposed security measures to help sustain the planet and traded cash to the Government for prison factory workers.  If you were found guilty you were put into giant work mills to produce food for the elite in a never-ending sentence.  The reporter was speaking frantically about the few rebels captured and automatically sentenced to life imprisonment on the spot before the transmission was cut off and the game resumed.

Months and months passed since that report.  And life went back to normal.  Summer had passed and I was deep into another fall semester and almost finished.

I had only noticed the first arrests not thinking anything about politics or the new freedom movement. I didn’t understand what it all meant and frankly I didn’t care.  I came from a wealthy family and so did all my college friends.  We were sophomores in college and had the entire world as our oyster.  But little did I know we were wrong.  I was wrong.

The world didn’t owe me anything and I was reckless with my fun spirited youth.  I guess we all were back then.  Because at the beginning no one knew what was really going on.  There were rumors.  But you never think something like that is going to happen to you.  Until one day it does.

It was November 23rd, 2020 and my twenty-first birthday.  My friends had hosted a party for me.  Everyone had come; including the one boy from my youth who had went to Silver Lake Camp with me.

In the past, Tommy had kissed me under a large willow by the river bank and he had touched my soul.  Tommy had been my dream lover since.  It was because he loved me when no one else had.  I was curvy and more vivacious but no one ever asked me to dance except Tommy. And no one had ever kissed me except Tommy.  He was a cool boy then and I was a fan girl but it felt like what we had shared was true love.

But Rachel’s death had changed my spirit.  My heart had been closed off and even seeing Tommy made my heart ache at the loss of my best friend.  So I had stolen kisses with Tommy but it had taken months of us sharing moments and getting to know each other again.

I couldn’t believe after years of changing schools, he was here with me.  With all my new friends from College it seemed surreal as we clanged our beers together and danced on the streets watching the snow fall.  Tommy danced only with me and kissed me again under the full moon and it was like magic as my heart became enflamed for him.

But we were young and stupid.  We took for granted the privileges we had that most didn’t and we were out partying and living it up.  Being twenty-one I was full of defiance and stardust for brains.  I had this fire inside me for everything but most of all for Tommy.  I was going to change the world or so I thought. But I was reckless.  My friends and I were out making donuts and snow drifting behind the old abandoned department store.  It wasn’t just snow drifting.  We had tied a sled to the back bumper while two people held on and drank as many beers as they could while we floated across the snow.

Tommy seemed to be a natural holding on to me and drinking a beer.  He reminded me of some superhero full of brawn as we flew across on our chariot.  He had this tall, sweet demeanor reminding me of some gentle giant.  I was in the front while he held me with his legs wrapped around me.  He had one arm around me holding the rope and the other holding his beer.  I completely enjoyed this swirling freedom of safety as I was enveloped in his strength.  But I dropped my beer clumsily after he leaned down to kiss me.

This is how we got caught.

The cord snapped and we ended up in a snowbank.  Tommy and I laid in each other’s arms in the snowbank laughing in-between kisses.  He embraced me gently as he kissed me long and deep.
