    INTRODUCTION

    Dear Reader,

Writing these statements, I believe them to be facts and an important aid on life’s journey. These writings were made in good faith. Some of the words are entirely mine through the patient study of scriptures; others I have gathered from many sources.

From Radio - Television - various books - magazines - conversations with people of many races and creeds - sayings I picked up throughout life.

From prime ministers’ speeches - a snippet from one of the Queen’s speeches – presidents’ speeches - children’s books - conversations with neighbors - correspondence by letters - goodwill cards from friends - and even quotations from my school days.

I have gathered all these words and sentences, as it were, to keep them alive. For words are ever powerful; they can kill, and they can give life; they can damage, and they can repair; yes! Words are all-embracing.

You will find the repeat of the same story teaching a different lesson, from a different perspective, in a different context, but the same story. Just as there are four gospels, but in essence, one gospel.

If these written words serve to encourage one soul to search the scriptures; if these words serve as an inspiration to one human being, to study God’s words, then I know my writing them was not in vain. God bless.

    Sis E. Burke -

    WHO ARE YOU?

    54664.png

T hat question sounds simple. But be not deceived by its sounds. It is one of the most penetrating questions you will ever face; one of the most difficult you will ever attempt to answer. For it pokes more than your mind and your memory. It searches - as God is said to search - the deepest secret of your being. And that is one secret too often kept even from yourself.

Nothing more personal could ever be asked, nor anything more important. Yet, few indeed are they who have a real reply to the question, and fewer still are they who grasp its transcendent import.

Many people today have wide and occasionally deep knowledge of countless things outside themselves, but pitiful, and even frightening, is the knowledge they have of themselves.

Recently several hundred average Americans were either stopped on the street, visited in their homes, confronted in their offices or other places of employment, and asked to help participate in a survey that was being conducted by some university psychologists. These people were handed a plain sheet of paper, then told that they would be rendering a real service if they would on that paper, give three replies to a very simple question.

    It Was: Who Are You?

Most people gasped. Some started stuttering. Not a few exclaimed: Who am I? – Why? this is the queerest question I ever heard"! Undoubtedly, it was - for hundreds. But from the replies submitted, it was evident to the psychologists at the University of California at Los Angeles that at last, after months of seeking, they had found what they desired: the single question which, in the shortest space of time, will reveal most about the individual interrogated.

Who am I? wrote one man, why - I don’t know? I see myself as a little inferior to others. I guess I am something put on this earth to make it a better place for those who come after me." That man was a builder. One wonders how much building of his own life; of his own character he had done.

    * A bank cashier did somewhat better. I am a soul gaining the experiences of mortality was his first response. I am a person progressing with an ultimate goal in mind, but not progressing as rapidly as I desire, was his second. His third answer read: I am an individual getting an awful lot of fun out of life." How much, we wonder, was that person putting into life?

A tailor simply stared from the paper to the investigator, then back to the paper again. Finally, while scratching his head, he said, who am I? - I never asked myself that question before … It kinda stops me. I guess I don’t know who I am, except that I am kinda all mixed up … I feel alone, all by myself, and that most people have it in for me. I feel like I gotta hold tight to everything I got, or somebody!! take it away from me.

From an officer came these three replies: I am an architect. I design office buildings. I am forty-five.

It was a simple housewife who gave the psychologists what they claim is the best revelation of a person fully aware of herself, consequently, quite intimately acquainted with herself, and therefore, one who most likely would be herself, and this know happiness. Her replies ran: Why, I’m Mary so-and-so. I am me. I am myself.

Now, inadequate as that sounds, it certainly was better than the one’s already quoted; and far better than what the man offered who gave his street address, his serial number, and his social security number. That man seemed to consider himself only a number! But you may be wondering how psychologists could ever come to such conclusions about Mary so-and-so from the seemingly obvious and almost meaningless replies that she gave. The explanation is not difficult. They claim that to be happy you must be able to express yourself fully; must be able to externalize your personality with ease and adequacy. But they also claim that before you will ever be able to do that, you will have to know yourself - and know yourself intimately.

Looking at the replies of the housewife, they see that uppermost in her consciousness is the fact that she is herself. This indicates that she is quite well acquainted with what it is that makes her Mary-so-and-so and nobody else. Hence, she really knows something of her inner driving impulses, urges, and desires. Consequently, she will be able to express herself outwardly with ease and adequacy.

A thought almost inevitably gives birth to an act; if you repeat that act often enough you generate a habit; if you consciously cultivate that habit, you will fashion a character. That is why psychologists like to get an insight into your habitual way of thinking. Give them what spontaneously rises to your consciousness, and they will surprise you by going down dark depths within you which you have never fathomed; measuring in you distances you had always thought measureless; calling back to consciousness things that you had completely forgotten.

A few decades back the witty polarization of science told you, that your body was composed of lime enough to make six bars of soap; iron enough to fashion a half-dozen tenpenny nails; phosphorous enough for twenty boxes of matches sugar enough to sweeten ten cups of coffee; just enough potassium to explode a toy cannon; and sufficient Sulphur to deflea one fair-sized dog.

Today while neither the physical nor the chemical constituents of man are neglected, ever heavier and heavier stress is being placed on the psychological. Too many modern scientists, however, stop short of the last logical step which would lead them to that broad, indestructible base on which rests the whole truth about the human individual. No one will deny that, today, more is known about your body and your mind, more about your emotions, instincts, sensations, desires, and drives, than perhaps was ever known before. Clearer insight into the unity of the human composite has been gained. This, in its turn, has generated a sharper awareness of the composite that makes the human individual. That is why it is something in the nature of an education to be examined in a modern clinic; for you learn an amazing amount not only about your physical constitution and your psychological make-up but are told some astonishing truths about their constant interaction.

Specialists in the material sciences cannot help you. Psychologists who are not also real philosophers will be greater hindrances than helpers. And the psychologist - philosopher, if he is to be of any real assistance, will have to be something of a theologian; for this question about you as a human being cannot be answered without touching the Divine. Therefore, the only ology that can ever give proper reply to the question: Who are you? is theology; a theology which teaches that each of us is a child of God who, under God’s loving guidance, and with God’s generous help, is working out a God-given destiny.

It sounds simple. Almost too simple. It strikes you as something that would come only from the mouth of a child. But never forget unless you become as little children …

For whenever you look at yourself and do not see the love, liberty, power, goodness, greatness, and fierce possessiveness who is God, you do not see yourself. Failing to see yourself aright, you will never come to the stimulating knowledge of just how important you are - and important to almighty God - at this very moment of time, on this very crowded globe whirling as a tiny speck in his almost limitless universe. You are important.

    Who Are You.

Especially remarkable is the acceptance of that great Greek generalization of the four causes:

    Who made you? (Efficient Cause.)

Why did God make you? (Final Cause.)

To whose image and likeness did God make you. (Formal Exemplar Cause.)

Is this likeness to God in your body (Material Cause)

Or in your soul? (Formal Internal Cause)

The best brief reply ever given to the question: Who are you? Came from human reason illumined by faith, and it was: I am a son of God.

Know thyself and you will arrive at the thrilling knowledge that y-o-u spells God!

You must spell God - in your alphabet if your days and night are to be anything more than the passing of time. Know thyself - know that y-o-u spells God. - and you will become a garnerer who every day goes forth to a fresh field for God and is found at nightfall still busy binding sheaves that will stay tight for all eternity. Know thyself - and there will be no footstep in your life that will be without specific godly meaning know thyself - and you will come to some knowledge of the Infinite.

All your thinkers are forced by the stern, unyielding evidence of fact to admit that you are a creature and, therefore, were created; but too often many of them stress the wrong element in creation and, hence, tell but half the truth about you. Nothing could be more dangerous; for, while half-truths are dangerous, there is none more dangerous than the one which says, creation is the production of something from nothing. That is no indication of whence you came. That is a shattered mirror which can hold only a distortion of what you are. Creation is not the production of something from nothing; it is the production of something from nothing by the Almighty Fiat of him who is your eternal and ever-loving Father.

Revelation tells you that God made man on the sixth day. It was not on the first day when he shattered the impenetrable darkness with his Fiat lux; nor on the second day when he canopied earth with the heavens; nor on the third when he separated land from the sea; nor was it on that fourth day when he placed the sun and the moon in his sky; nor was it yet on the fifth when he put life into the waters of the sea and filled the aid with the flashing wings and the songs of birds. Only after he had filled his world with wonders did he set about fashioning that masterpiece who was to be the crown of his visible creation.

On that sixth day the unchangeable God changed his manner of making. He did not say Let man be made as he had said about light and the firmament and all the other creatures. He said, Let us make man. The difference is highly significant and tells you precisely why and how you spell God.

What wonder is this? Who is he for whose production God takes council and sovereign wisdom enters deliberation? This same text set King David singing It was your hands, O God, that formed and fashioned me. (Ps. 118:73) This was the text that caused St. Ambrose to remark that what was sufficient to give being to the great universe was not enough to give being to man; for while with one of his hands God made the heavens and rendered them incorruptible, it took two of his hands to fashion man.

The story of your beginning as told by God the Holy Ghost in the first book of the Bible is essential for any intelligent and true reply to the question: Who are you? For while reason might lead
