Authors Note
The Love of God is an old hymn that is not sung much anymore. Written by Frederick M. Lehman in 1917, the words are as true today as they were when he wrote them:
The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell,
It goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win:
His erring child He reconciled and pardoned from his sin.
(Refrain)
O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure the saints’ and angels’ song.
When years of time shall pass away and earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray on rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure shall still endure, all measureless and strong:
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race the saints’ and angels’ song. (Refrain)
Could we with ink the ocean fill and were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill and every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry,
Nor could the scroll contain the whole though stretched from sky to sky. (Refrain)
To God be the Glory

The Power of Reflection: Understanding God's Love in Christianity
As Christians, we believe in the power of reflection. Reflection allows us to examine our thoughts, our actions, and our relationship with God. It gives us the opportunity to understand God's love for us and to seek his guidance and wisdom. In this lesson, we will explore the significance of reflection in Christianity and how it can help us grow in our faith. We will delve into the Bible and discover how reflection played a role in the lives of some of the most significant figures in Christian history. By the end of this lesson, we hope to inspire you to take time to reflect on your own spiritual journey and deepen your connection with God.
1. Introduction to the Power of Reflection in Christianity
In Christianity, reflection is a powerful tool that can help believers to deepen their understanding of God's love and their relationship with Him. Through reflection, Christians can take the time to pause and consider their experiences, their actions, and their faith in order to gain new insights and perspectives.
Reflection can take many forms, from prayer and meditation to journaling and discussion with others. It can be a deeply personal practice, or it can be shared with a community of believers.
Through reflection, Christians can also gain a greater appreciation for the teachings of Jesus and the Bible. They can better understand the love and sacrifice that Jesus demonstrated through His life and death, and how these teachings can be applied to their own lives.
Ultimately, reflection is a key component of spiritual growth in Christianity. By taking the time to reflect on their faith and their relationship with God, believers can deepen their understanding of His love and grow closer to Him.
2. Understanding God's Love as the foundation of Christianity
The concept of love is at the heart of Christianity. In fact, it is the foundation of the entire faith. We see this through the teachings of Jesus, who emphasized the importance of love and compassion toward others.
The Bible tells us that God's love is boundless and unconditional. It is not based on what we do or do not do, but rather on who we are as individuals. This love is often referred to as agape love, which means a selfless love that is focused on the well-being of others.
One of the most famous verses in the Bible, John 3:16, states that For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
This verse encapsulates the idea that God's love is so great that he sacrificed his own son for the good of humanity.
When we truly understand and accept God's love, it can transform our lives in a powerful way. We are able to let go of feelings of guilt and shame, and instead live in a state of grace and forgiveness. This love also inspires us to love and serve others, just as Jesus did during his time on earth.
In summary, understanding God's love is the foundation of Christianity. It is through this love that we can experience grace, forgiveness, and compassion towards others.
3. The Importance of Reflection in Christian Life
In Christianity, reflection is a vital aspect of spiritual growth. It is a time for one to pause and look back at their life and examine their beliefs, actions, and relationship with God. The Bible encourages reflection and self-examination, for it is through reflection that one can gain a deeper understanding of God's love and purpose for their life.
Reflection allows a Christian to identify areas in their life that need growth and improvement and recognize moments where God has been present and has provided blessings. It is a time to acknowledge and confess sins, seek forgiveness, and renew one's commitment to God. Through reflection, a Christian can build a stronger relationship with God and find peace and comfort in his presence.
Moreover, reflection is not only important for individual spiritual growth, but also for the collective growth of the church. It gives Christians an opportunity to share their faith journey, encourage one another, and learn from each other's experiences. It fosters a sense of community and unity among believers, as they share in the joys and struggles of their faith.
In essence, reflection is a powerful tool in the Christian life, as it helps individuals and communities to grow in their faith and understanding of God's love. It is a time to be still, listen, and reflect on God's word and his presence in one's life.
4. How Reflection Helps us to Understand God's Love
Reflection is an important aspect of understanding God's love in Christianity. When we take the time to reflect on our personal experiences, we can see how God's love has been present throughout our lives. By reflecting on the ways in which God has shown us love, we become more aware of His presence in our lives and more grateful for His blessings.
Furthermore, reflection allows us to gain a deeper understanding of God's love and how it extends to all His creation. As we reflect on our own experiences, we can also reflect on the experiences of others and see how God's love is at work in their lives as well.
Through reflection, we can also identify areas where we may need to grow in our understanding of God's love. Perhaps we struggle to love others as God loves us, or maybe we struggle to accept God's love for ourselves. By reflecting on these areas, we can ask God for help and guidance in deepening our understanding of His love.
Ultimately, reflection is a powerful tool for understanding God's love in Christianity. It allows us to develop a more personal relationship with God, to see His love in action, and to grow in our appreciation for all that He has done for us.
5. The Role of Prayer and Meditation in Reflection
Prayer and meditation are essential to reflecting on God's love. It is through prayer that we communicate with God and seek His guidance. In prayer, we express our gratitude, ask for forgiveness, and seek His help in our daily lives. It is through prayer that we can develop a deeper understanding of God's love for us, and in turn, reflect on that love.
Meditation, on the other hand, helps us to quiet our minds and focus on God's presence. It allows us to be still and listen to the voice of God within us. Through meditation, we can gain clarity on our thoughts and emotions, and open ourselves up to receive divine guidance.
Both prayer and meditation are practices that require discipline and commitment, but the rewards are immeasurable. By taking the time to reflect on God's love through prayer and meditation, we can deepen our relationship with Him and experience a sense of peace and contentment that is truly transformative.
In Christianity, prayer and meditation are not just tools for reflection, but also powerful spiritual practices that connect us to God's love and grace. As we cultivate these practices, we can experience a sense of oneness with God that is both empowering and transformative and find strength and guidance in even the most challenging of times.
6. Examples of Reflection in the Bible
The Bible is filled with examples of reflection and contemplation. In fact, many of the most impactful moments in the Bible occurred during times of deep reflection. For instance, in the book of Genesis, Jacob wrestled with God throughout the night and came out with a newfound understanding of God's love and mercy. Similarly, in the New Testament, the apostle Paul spent three years in the desert reflecting on his faith and ultimately emerged as a powerful leader and advocate for Christianity.
Another example of reflection in the Bible can be found in the Psalms. David, the author of many of the Psalms, often reflected on his relationship with God, his struggles, and his hopes and dreams. Through these reflections, he was able to deepen his connection with God and find comfort and solace in his faith.
Furthermore, in the Gospels, Jesus himself is often depicted taking time to reflect and pray. He frequently withdrew to
