Chapter One
Once upon a time in a not so far away land, there lived a shy and quiet girl named Alia. She was a beautiful girl with long brown hair and bright blue eyes. Her house was surrounded by a big flower filled meadow surrounded by a thick forest and it was a very big old farmhouse that her great-great grandparents built.
She had everything that a seven-year-old could ever ask for; her own room, a kitchen full of sweet things her mother would bake and homemade candies and all the toys in the world, but Alia wasn't happy. Her parents only wanted what was best for her and it made them sad to see her unhappy. No one understood why Alia was so sad and her parents just figured that she must be lonely being an only child.
All day she wandered around her big house feeling empty and alone. One ordinary and otherwise uneventful day, she went out into the meadow to go exploring and to pick some flowers the way she had a thousand times before. The meadow was filled with grasshoppers and in it grew different kinds of wildflowers all year round. Meanwhile, the forest was so different from the meadow. Where the meadow was usually sunny and had tall grass and pretty flowers, the forest was always dark and smelled like mushrooms and dampness. Alia loved the difference between the two and saw them as two very separate worlds.
It had gotten so hot in the meadow, and she walked into the forest to sit in the shade. She was allowed to play in the meadow, but her parents did not like her to go deep into the forest. Surely they would not be mad that she was just sitting on the edge. She found a comfortable tree stump, trying to cool off a bit from picking all the yellow flowers.
As she was sitting on the stump, thinking about how happy her mother would be with the pretty flowers, she saw a quick flash of something through the trees and tall bushes ahead. It startled her and she jumped up quickly. Suddenly she remembered that her parents had warned her about what could happen in the forest. She also quickly remembered that she was not allowed to go alone into the forest, and yet here she was. Alia knew her parents would get mad if anything happened to her and she wished she would have just stayed inside that day.
Sometimes it was so hard for her to listen and do as she was told. Especially in the meadow. Once, she chased a yellow butterfly all the way to the far end of the meadow where the creek ran and stepped into it without even knowing. When she got home with wet socks and shoes, her mother and father were very mad, and she was not allowed to go outside for the rest of the week.
