The first operating systems: Pioneers of Computers

Today, computers cannot be operated without operating systems. Therefore, modern operating systems have become an essential tool for computer users. However, a look at the history of operating systems shows that they initially had a different format. Early operating systems did not offer graphical user interfaces or network management features like modern operating systems today. Instead, they were designed for more straightforward tasks and to enable computers to run efficiently.

The first operating systems appeared in the late 1950s and early 1960s. During this period, computer hardware was less powerful and more expensive. Therefore, computer users wanted to use the hardware most efficiently to achieve the best possible performance. For this purpose, the concept of operating systems emerged.

The first operating systems were designed to run on hardware such as the IBM 701, Ferranti Pegasus, and UNIVAC 1103. These operating systems allowed multiple programs to run simultaneously on computers based on queue programming. In this way, they minimized the computer's idle time, allowing it to be used more efficiently.

Another feature of the first operating system was the batch process structure. Batch processing means collecting and processing all the data required for a particular task. This is different from today's interactive processing. Early operating systems did not allow users to interact with the computer. Instead, users would write their operations on a paper tape or card, insert the video or card into the computer and let the operating system process it.

There were many different options among the first
