History of Computer
WHAT IS A COMPUTER?
A computer is an electronic device that accepts data, stores and processes the data into information.
The computer is able to processes the data into information because of the instructions given to it by the programs that run in it. The most important of all the programs in a computer is the operating system (OS) upon which all other programs run.
The physical parts of a computer are called hardware and examples are monitor, keyboard, fan and motherboard while the instructions that run it or run in it are called software or computer programs.
There are two main variants of computer which are desktop and laptop computers. The desktop computer has unique and separate components which are connected together using serial cords to form the desktop computer. These components are listed below:
Monitor (use to display information)
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
Keyboard (use to input or type data into the computer)
Mouse (use as a pointing device)
The laptop computer also have all the parts listed above but they are miniaturized (smaller in sizes) and packed together into a single and compact device. For this reason, it is small and can easily be carried about by individual owners.

It was Charles Babbage who eventually invented the first mechanical computer and for this purpose he is referred to as the father of modern computer.
Electromechanical computers were later invented as well. This was followed by the invention of purely electrical computers which are referred to as digital computers. A good example of the first type of digital computer is Colossus built in Britain.
