    Operating System (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and applications (programs) software. It is the most important software that runs on a computer.

    All computer programs require an operating system to function and the only exemption to this at the moment is firmware.

    The types of operating systems commonly installed on most personal computers (PC) are as follows:

    Microsoft Windows Operating System

    Mac Operating System for Apple computers

    Linux Operating System

    Ubuntu Operating System

    Note that most modern operating systems now use Graphical User Interface (GUI) instead of the earlier Command Line (CL) interface. GUI is a graphical user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices through the use of graphical icons as illustrated below. Also note that the focus of this book is the Windows Operating System.

    WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM

    Windows Operating is graphical user interface (GUI) operating system developed by Microsoft. The operating system has different families of operating systems and the major ones are:

    Windows NT mainly for Personal and Server Computers (Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 R2 etc.).
