Karma Came On Time - Katrina Batiste

    CHAPTER 1

    WELCOME LEON

Today is Leon’s first day at his new school, and he’s not looking forward to it. Leon moved from Atlanta, Georgia, to a small town called Brunswick. His mom wanted to move somewhere more slow-paced, and a friend told her about Brunswick. Leon and his little sister didn’t want to leave Atlanta, where they had friends and family.

Leon was very popular at his old school. All the girls loved him, and all the guys were cool with him. The girls adored his smooth skin and his bowed legs, and he was a very respectful young man. His best friend was his cousin Tyson, whom he knew he would miss the most when they left Atlanta. Although they didn’t want to leave Atlanta, they were all excited about moving to the suburbs. Back in Atlanta, they always lived in upscale apartments in the city, which had more traffic than they could handle.

Leon is a good kid. He’s 17 years old and has never been in any real trouble. His dad died in a car accident when he was 8 years old, and his little sister was just a year old. Leon’s dad got into a fatal car accident on his way to pick his little sister up from daycare. His dad was with his mistress, who was also killed in the accident. The mistress was the mother of his little sister, whom they were going to pick up from daycare that day.

Leon’s mom was called to be notified about her husband’s death. She found out about the daughter he had and the baby his mistress was pregnant with. Leon’s mom got custody of his little sister after no one from the mistress’s family came forward. Leon’s family thought that his mom was insane for taking custody of her husband’s child from outside their marriage, but now they can’t imagine life without her. The whole family loves and cares for Leon’s little sister, who doesn’t know that his mom isn’t her biological mom. Leon’s mom is the only mom she knows and remembers, and no one talks about her biological mom.

Leon’s mom is a strong Black woman with a heart of gold. She’s a prenatal doctor that everyone loves. Leon is tall and dark-skinned like his dad, and everyone tells him he’s his dad’s twin. His mom has him spoiled; she overcompensates for his dad not being there.

On their first day at their new schools, Leon’s mom cooked bacon, eggs, pancakes, and grits for breakfast. Y’all come and eat. I’m dropping y’all off and picking y’all up today, but you’ll be catching the bus tomorrow, Leon’s mom said.

As Leon entered his new school, he looked around and noticed that there were very few Black students. This was very different from his old school, where there were more Black kids than white kids. Leon went to his homeroom class and sat at the back, hoping the teacher wouldn’t make him stand up and introduce himself. A few students stared at him without saying anything, and then a loud, popular kid entered the room. He was about 5’8 with brown hair, blue eyes, and a bright smile that he used a lot. The popular kid gave personalized handshakes to a few people in the class, including the teacher, which Leon thought was cool. The girls giggled and all spoke to the popular kid at the same time. Leon knew that this kid, BJ, was the Leon" of this school, as he was treated similarly back at his old school.

BJ sat at the desk in front of Leon and introduced himself. What’s up? I’m BJ. You must be new here? he asked. Yeah, I’m Leon. I just moved here from Atlanta, Leon replied. They chatted about their classes and discovered they had third period together, along with BJ’s friends. Leon was looking forward to meeting BJ’s friends, thinking that if BJ was cool, his friends would be the same way.

When the third period bell finally rang, Leon went to class and sat in the back, waiting for BJ and his friends. BJ entered the class with two boys following him. Leon, this is Marcus, my homeboy, and Terry, my cousin. This is the crew; we live in the same neighborhood too, BJ said. Marcus and Leon got to know each other and found out they lived in the same area, Swanson Lakes. Terry seemed shy and mainly spoke to BJ. Leon quickly realized that without BJ, Terry and Marcus wouldn’t be friends.

As the weeks passed, Leon and Marcus became close friends and started hanging out together even without BJ and Terry. They spent time at each other’s houses, and Marcus was glad he finally had someone who looked like him to hang with. Marcus was tall, brown-skinned with hazel eyes, and a very handsome young man. He came from the south side of Brunswick, where all the low-income housing was located. Marcus’s mom had lived in low-income housing for a few years while working to get her family out of the neighborhood.

She met Marcus’s dad at a convenience store, where he offered to pump her gas. She fell in love with his hazel eyes at first sight, and they began talking that day and every day after that. He didn’t have money at the time, but she stood
