Chapter One
Jocelyn Alexander looked at her phone. No message or missed call. He promised he would call her around nine o’clock for their usual late night chit-chat. Why must all men lie to me? Why won’t he just pick up the phone? Should she just give in and call him first?
She collapsed onto the bed and turned on her television. Maybe something good would provide her entertainment for the night. Jocelyn surfed through the channels, but nothing could ease her boredom. All she wanted was to talk to her boyfriend. Maybe talk about the upcoming wrestling pay-per-view or something. Either way she just wanted to hear his smooth voice reassuring her everything would be all right.
Jocelyn eyes focused on the light flashing from her phone. Her heart raced as she heard the familiar lyrics of John Legend’s All of Me.
She smiled when she saw Leo’s picture flash across the screen. Finally.
Hey, boo,
she said, trying not to sound as if she was waiting for his call.
Hey, mama, what’s going on?
he asked. How was your day?
Their nightly phone calls always began with Leo complaining about school and Jocelyn encouraging him to keep going. Leo always complained about how much he hated talking on the phone, but he admitted how much he needed her in his life.
She sighed, not sure what she wanted to say. The usual, baby. I’m tired of my job, and I am ready for graduate school. I pray I get into Rutgers for their education program.
Oh, well, you will get in,
he said.
Something seemed to be bothering him because he wasn’t saying much. Why are you so short with me tonight? Did something happen tonight?
No, I’m just …
He paused for a few seconds. I, uh, don’t feel like talking.
Do you think we will be on that Catfish show? I would like to meet the host, Nev." Jocelyn laughed, trying to change the subject.
Communication was the most important factor in a long-distance relationship. Jocelyn understood how stressful school was, but it wasn’t like him to want to end the conversation so early. Maybe there was another woman in New Jersey. He wasn’t exactly the relationship type, and he’d addressed that early in their relationship. Still, he wanted to try to make things work because he told her she was different.
Every time he posted on Facebook or Instagram there were females leaving smiley faces and winks on his posts. Whenever she interrogated him about them, he said he hated all the attention. He never addressed his fans
who were dying for his attention, putting their long-distance relationship to the test.
Before finding Leo, she had always wanted to attend Rutgers University, and now she had even more motivation because her boyfriend of one year attended the school. He was a semester away from graduating and was already accepted to their master’s program in computer engineering. Leo also talked about how much he admired his woman for graduating magna cum laude from North Carolina A&T.
No one knew about her boyfriend because they hadn’t met in person yet. They spent most of the beginning of their
