Introduction
T his well crafted and interesting story depicts the psychology of growing up. It is a study on the effects of social environment on the character of a growing child.
Centred on Ben, whose hope of growing up in Nigeria as a responsible child was dashed by the behaviours of his mother, Merinda, a single parent, the story takes the reader from the beginning of his life to the tragic end.
From the start, the writer introduces Ben to the reader as an individual who is full of life; a young man full of promises of being a successful personality. But in the view of the mother, Ben is a good-for-nothing fellow. She sees nothing good in him mainly because of his opposition to her wayward lifestyle even at a tender age of twelve.
This motherly hatred towards Ben soon became an albatross round his neck, determining his fortune as a child and later as an adult.
The story becomes more interesting as Ben grows up, especially when he was carted away to London like a puppy in chain by his father. This sudden movement to London, which was against his wish, began a new and dreadful chapter in Ben’s life. His hatred for his father knows no bounds. And so is his hatred for the society in general.
His mental state sets him against the whites whom he considers as criminal-minded. In fact, he feels the ‘white people perpetrate all the crimes in the world.’ This leads him into fighting his classmate, Howard, whom he calls a white pig. This happens in his year 11 and at the end of Key Stage 4. And by the time he gets far in his education he has become a killer.
This state of madness culminates into serious calamity to whoever crosses his way. His
