A Poet Parts from His Muse
After she co-opted me, I said,
"You fool, you haven't taken far enough
The notion that the artist must be dead
To everything except his vision, rough
As that philosophy must seem to him."
She looked at me with horror as my eyes,
Illuminated by the fire within
My reassembled being, made her rise
From bed and lean away from me a bit.
Our union was a danger. She was not
Prepared to fully sacrifice to it
Her life. Because she wouldn't cast her lot
With my endeavor, I was forced to bar
The Muse from Helicon. Her fall was far.
