Every person is unique and individual. Some are introverted, some are extroverted, some are confident and insensitive, others are sensitive and soulful.
We are all different - and that's a good thing.
Human uniqueness and individuality can already be observed in small children. They develop differently, have different characters and react individually to their environment.
Again and again I meet worried parents who think that their child is somehow different
. The child is often thoughtful, tearful and very sensitive to the slightest stressful situation. Every little thing causes tears, and the world comes to an end with every wrong look.
Does it look familiar? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed as a parent? Do you want to support your highly sensitive child but don't know where and how to start?
In this guide you will find all the important information and tips on the subject of high sensitivity in children
. It doesn't matter whether your child is highly sensitive or just a sensitive person, my parenting guide will certainly help you.
In my book you will find useful parenting tips for everyday life, school, social interaction and health . The playful exercises and meditations are designed to help your little one relax and build confidence.
In addition, you will learn which typical characteristics and symptoms of high sensitivity belong and how you and your child can best deal with them in order to ensure a harmonious, loving and child-friendly togetherness. In addition, you can expect a test with which you can check whether your child is highly sensitive and much more!
This guide does not replace any medical or psychotherapeutic treatment. Rather, it helps you understand your child and gives you some food for thought and educational support along the way.
1. Introduction to high sensitivity in children
Nowadays, a lot of value is placed on a loving, open cooperation between parents and children. Mothers and fathers are concerned about how best to bring up their children and question all the methods of education presented to them by the media and experts.
Today, more attention is paid to the individuality and personal feelings of the children.
These are the best prerequisites for understanding highly sensitive children and providing them with the best possible support. In this way, your little darling can develop his personality and become a strong adult . Because especially in our fast-paced and colorful society, it is important for your sensitive child to have a solid foundation and a safe haven where they can rest and recharge their batteries.
In the following text you will learn all the basics from me about high sensitivity in children.
1.1 High sensitivity - just a fashion diagnosis
?
––––––––
High sensitivity (in short: HS) cannot be described as a fashionable diagnosis. Just 20 years ago, the affected children were not really noticed. Everyone is different, one thought.
In today's world, high sensitivity is no longer an unfamiliar word. In my opinion, this topic is becoming more and more present in our society and in the media. This psychological phenomenon is also increasingly attracting the interest of many doctors, educators, psychologists and scientists from other disciplines. And I'm glad. Because highly sensitive children do not have it easy. They must learn to cope with their intense perception and resulting behavior. According to estimates, around 20 percent of children in Germany are highly sensitive. These little beings want to be understood and accepted - just as they are.
The high sensitivity is nothing abnormal
and also not a disease. Those affected simply tend to perceive information and stimuli more intensively and to process them in more detail than their fellow human beings - a really great and positive characteristic that unfortunately often gets in the way of those affected in everyday life. Dealing with highly sensitive children needs to be learned. The first necessary step is to recognize the high sensitivity as such.
––––––––
Here are some small case studies that you might be able to identify your child with:
Ten-year-old Kathrin cannot stand negative moods. Peaceful coexistence is extremely important to them. The slightest misunderstanding makes her sad and she can hardly sleep at night. Being tired the next day has a negative impact on their academic performance.
Philip, eight years old, freaks out when his little brother climbs into his bunk bed. He feels harassed and hurt when someone crosses his personal boundaries. Philip is offended for hours and feels misunderstood. This behavior also puts a strain on his social contacts.
Anne is nine years old and can't stand it when her favorite dress is in the wash. When her mother gives her another dress to wear, Anne can cry for hours. She loves the green dress with the floral pattern. And only that. She feels betrayed by her mother for taking away her favorite dress.
Kathrin, Philip and Anne are nice, well behaved and highly sensitive children. Being intensely aware of their surroundings, they react with extreme behavior, even when there is no obvious reason for it. You feel overwhelmed and exhausted even with little stress. The peak of their stress perception is reached faster than their peers.
The children are often overwhelmed with such behavior and emotional chaos. Since high sensitivity is not a disease, the children do not need special therapy. First and foremost, it is about parents finding the right way to deal with their highly sensitive child and supporting them. This is only possible if you as a parent understand the phenomenon of high sensitivity.
In order to understand the world of the highly sensitive, we are going on a little excursion into research together.
Origins of High Sensitivity Research
Compared to many other research fields in the field of psychology and medicine,
