    CHAPTER ONE

    GROWING UP

I was brought up in a family that placed great importance on faith and spirituality, while living in Windsor Castle, Portland, Jamaica. My parents, who were devout Christians, firmly believed in the Bible verse Proverbs 22:6, which states that if you train up a child in the way they should go, they will not depart from it when they are older.

Going to church was an essential part of our family life, and although I was a quiet and introverted child, I always felt comforted when surrounded by family and friends in church. I particularly enjoyed sitting next to my grandmother, who would often bring along treats such as candy bars, peanuts, and peppermints in her handbag for me. She was always prepared and also carried useful items such as a handkerchief, pen and notepad, and a small bottle of water. My grandmother's bag was much more than just a place to hold her belongings.

It was a tangible expression of her love and devotion to me and a symbol of the unwavering support and care she provided throughout my childhood. Although she is no longer with us, I treasure the memories of sitting beside her in church and eagerly waiting to see what surprises she had in store for me. As I grew older, my faith in God continued to deepen, and I explored my beliefs outside of the church by reading the Bible and participating in religious activities like Bible study and youth group. The strong faith and commitment to God demonstrated by my parents influenced my worldview, and I began to see the world through a spiritual lens.

The trajectory of my life changed drastically when my mother was taken by cancer at a young age. Watching her suffer until her last breath had a profound effect on me, and I still carry that pain with me today. Losing my mother made life extremely difficult and painful, and I often asked God why this had to happen. Her death had a significant impact on my academic performance, as I struggled to concentrate during her illness and fell behind in school. After her passing, I was lost and felt alone, but I knew that my mother would want me to continue my education and pursue my dreams, so I persevered.

The day before my mother died, she told me that she would be with God the following day, and although I hoped she was lying, I woke up to find her lifeless body on the bed. It was a harsh reality to face, and even now, tears still flow down my face when I think about it. After her passing, my family's love and support helped me carry on, and I eventually moved to Kingston, Jamaica, got married, and had a son. Despite the distance, I remain close to my siblings, and we talk every day and get together whenever possible. We reminisce about our memories with our mother and support each other through struggles and successes. We have made a promise to always be there for each other, and nothing will ever separate us, not even our mother's death.

In some ways, our bond has grown stronger since losing our mother. We know how precious life is and how important it is to cherish our time with each other. We may not have our mother with us anymore, but we have each other, and that's something we treasure deeply.

The challenges started again when my family and I migrated to the United States. If I had the choice of not going, I would have loved to stay with my siblings in the same country, even if not in the same state. It was tough to leave my siblings behind. I remember the sad day we held each other and cried, reminding each other that mom said we should stick together.

When I arrived in New York in December, the cold was unbearable, and I was overwhelmed with homesickness, longing to return to Jamaica. I was too scared to venture outdoors and face the frigid temperatures. However, eventually, I came to terms with my new reality and accepted that I needed to seek employment. To combat the cold, my friend Desrene purchased a heavy leather jacket for me, which ended up causing me physical discomfort and pain in my shoulders during its first use. Even now, we still find it amusing and laugh about it.

It was a challenge for us to secure new job opportunities, but we eventually found work at separate companies in New York City. I was employed at New Direction in the fashion district of Manhattan, under the management of a considerate and benevolent manager named Andrew Tabor. Although I had a steady job and a thriving career, there was a sense of incompleteness in my
