Ollie'isms - Ian Holloway
Introduction
A lot of the quotes in this book were inspired by my dad. He had a wonderful happiness about him and he loved being in other people’s company.
No matter what would happen, he would think of something to say that would make people laugh or smile. He wasn’t a comedian, but no matter how life got, he was always generous and was never short of a saying or comment that seemed to make sense of everything, somehow. I grew up with his wit and wisdom and undoubtedly, it left its mark on me, togther with my own take on life, of course.
‘I feel like a dog with two dicks’, ‘Fit as a butcher’s dog’, ‘All cock and ribs’, ‘Fit as a drover’s dog’ – just some of his regular analogies, most of which seemed to include a dog for some reason! Even when something bad has happened, I’ll think about what dad would probably have said at that moment and it will make me smile.
He’d bring warmth and joy when people needed it most, just by saying something or remembering something fondly and I think that’s a gift - I really do.
There is a book of quotes that was published a few years back but it did contain a number of inaccuracies. I didn’t know a thing about it and didn’t have the chance to say whether I’d been misquoted or misunderstood – I think it suits a lot of people if they can make me sound crazy or interpret what I say so it doesn’t actually make any sense – it must make better copy or something.
The quotes in this book are, however, bona fide and, where necessary, I’ve explained why I said what I did at particular times.
There’s an old saying that the apple never falls very far from the tree. I didn’t fall very far from my dad’s tree and there are loads of saying and comments that I remember that I’ve kept for myself but they make me remember my dad warmly. I hope you enjoy them, too.
