About this ebook

Two women... two enemies. One deadly terror threat. One jealous sister.
One true love.
What could possibly go wrong?

An MI6 shadow assassin and a beautiful terrorist are thrown together in the midst of a terror threat, the like of which London has never seen before.

This is 'Unbreakable', the penultimate episode of the Red Mist series.

Things come to a head at a castle in North Wales, but it's not Madeline or Zana who initiate them. Both on the receiving end of life-changing events, neither knows if the other is dead or alive.

Then, as the aftermath wrings the neck of every emotion in existence, through the anguish there is a light at the end of the tunnel… and it's shining from a very unexpected someone.

Travel with Madeline and Zana as they follow a life-threatening, perilous road, taking them to a place neither believes can exist.

Killing someone isn't meant to be this hard. Neither is falling in love.

The RTG mission in life is simple... to not be like everyone else! ‘Going Green’ has taken on a new meaning, in the book world at least. Whilst we applaud the original meaning (ebooks are a perfect way to promote that) we also try to present a different angle to it. The tendency these days is that if you don’t look and read like everyone else, you don’t sell books. Maybe there’s some truth in that, but we simply don’t do it. The RTG books have been described as a ‘breath of fresh literary air’, and, by those discovering us for the first time, ‘unexpectedly good’. We know many readers prefer the same-old same old, and that’s fine. It’s just not what you get from the RTG stable. Those who know about such things said it would take five years to become a proficient author... I scoffed at that. They were wise. It took six. It’s one reason why even today we remodel existing books, and will always do so. Right from the early years the stories were always good, but were put into words less well than they could have been! These days we have several series and a few standalones, the hit Daisy series most popular amongst them. In everything we do, the same provisos apply – Never the same book twice. If we can’t think up a good story, it doesn’t get written. The RTG brand is about exciting and twisty plots, a fast pace which doesn’t waste words, and endearing (sometimes slightly crazy) characters. We can never please everyone, but it works for us, and, it seems, for those who appreciate our work. Enjoy! Richard, Ann and the RTG crew

    Chapter 1

AS WE HEADED NORTHWARDS on the M40, the pendant seemed to burn a hole in my hand. Eyes that seemed to be magnetised to Zana’s little green light would not look away for more than a second, hardly even daring to blink.

I’d bagged one half of the front passenger seat this time. Although if I forced myself to admit it, it was Coop who’d bagged it for me, making sure Comfort sat next to him and me next to her. He’d suggested Miles and Vic ride in the back, and use the time to research everything they could about our destination.

That seemed to suit everyone just fine. Except her of course.

Hitting the speed limit and keeping it there, the journey would take at least three hours. There was no telling what we’d find when we arrived, likely not too long before dawn. Discovering all we could about the castle and its layout was crucially important. It didn’t exactly prove difficult for the guys in the back to discover all there was to know.

About the castle, its new owner, and its paranormal reputation.

Miles looked impressed, but not exactly pleased with what they found on the computer. ‘Whoa, this place is big...’ he breathed. ‘But it’s not exactly a castle, strictly speaking.’

Vic chipped in. ‘It was built by some English gent called Lord Hesketh in the early eighteen twenties, on the site that had once been a medieval castle. Seems he modelled it on old European castles he’d visited... just for the hell of it, by all accounts.’

Miles continued. ‘When he died it eventually passed to his grandson, who...’ He broke off, and let out a chuckle. ‘Who was banished from it by his wife, the Countess of Dundonald, who was quite... formidable, it seems.’

Vic grinned. ‘Nineteenth century girl power... before girl-power existed. Seems she wore the pants around there, go her.’

Miles brought things up to date. ‘More recently the castle fell into disrepair. No one seemed to have had the means to restore it. Until...’

I looked round to Miles as his words faded away. ‘Until, Miles?’

He nodded, his next words helping a big piece of the jigsaw to fall into place. ‘Until just over a year ago, when it was bought by someone with the resources to bring it back to life. The owner of GendTech Industries.’

Coop let out a knowing, mirthless laugh. ‘Charles Markovski?’

    ‘One and the same.’

Coop shook his head. ‘That’s our Marcus then.’

I frowned to him. ‘You seem to know this guy?’

‘Know of him, yeah. He’s been on a low-level flag for a while, ever since... ever since Zana and her compatriots arrived on Earth.’

The butterflies had suddenly been called to the ring for round four. They kind of knew why they were boxing. Suddenly all my attention had been ripped away from the pendant in my hand. ‘Coop?’ I whispered.

He threw me an agonised kind of grimace. ‘GendTech owns the lab where Zana and Arik were working when you first got brought into all this, girl.’

I knew the name had rung a vague bell. No one had ever said outright where Zana had been doing her research, but somehow the back of my mind had known the name. Once again the stab of recall was creasing pain into my gut. When we’d spent our fateful night at Luigi’s restaurant, she’d told me her research had involved biogenetics.

So had Arik’s, working at the same facility. Suddenly I’d connected the wires, and the motor had turned a full circle, right back to when it all first started.

Zana had hardly been innocent, working there to discover everything about human genetics, so the Calandurans knew how to control us when the mother-ship arrived... but she’d had no idea that while Arik was working there with her, he’d obviously also been cosying up to the boss.

The boss who was immensely wealthy, understood human biology like the back of his hand, and was a major force in genetic research.

If there ever was a nuclear reaction of common interests, that had to be it.

Coop glanced to me. ‘Sorry Madeline, but I guess what goes around comes around. I still don’t think Zana knew what was going on behind the scenes... but Arik sure as hell did.’

I nodded back. I didn’t believe for one moment Zana was holding back on us, but something else had just twisted my gut inside out, yet again.

Zana was on her way to meet the guy who it seems is in charge of all things evil, and once she did, it was going to be even harder to convince her it wasn’t all her fault.

Vic hadn’t finished with the revelations. ‘Folks, you gotta hear this... it seems Charles the caring philanthropist is spending a fortune turning the castle into a refuge for homeless teenagers. Geez, what a fine good-hearted soul he is.’

Comfort shook her head slowly from side to side. ‘And that’s the final jigsaw piece in place.’

I saw the distress on her face, and Coop’s hand slip into hers. He tried to hide his action, but he wasn’t quick enough for me. It told me something I’d suspected for a while. There was more to their relationship than just work... and something else was going on that was writing fear all over Comfort’s pretty face.

Then Miles deliberately put the final spoke in the wheel, for one of us at least. ‘Hey Coop, according to this, until Charlie bought the place it was a Mecca for ghost hunters. Seems the place is rife with them.’

He growled out the words. ‘Ain’t no such thing as ghosts.’

I had to smile to myself. It appeared my big brave immediate boss had a weak spot after all. Then the pendant ripped my vague amusement away. The red dot that was my location, and the rapidly-moving green dot that was Zana’s shuttle, had just converged. My eyes misted up as they inadvertently looked into the night sky, even though they knew they couldn’t possibly see her.

‘Guys... Zana has just flown right over us.’

Coop nodded, and his grim expression was as clear as day in the darkness of the cab. ‘Let’s hope she ain’t heading into hell.’

I shook my head despairingly, all too aware she would be at the castle at least two hours before we could get there. And that once we did turn up, we could hardly go in with all guns blazing.

There would be plenty of time for her to be all alone in hell.

    Chapter 2

ZANA FLEW THE SHUTTLE in a slow, low-level circle around the castle grounds, looking for somewhere to set down. The estate was huge, built into the side of a wooded hill overlooking the town and the sea beyond. There seemed to be a main building, but the whole rambling estate was punctuated with a multitude of stone walls and separate, smaller buildings.

She could see that the main residential building had been newly roofed, and its large circular tower restored. Lights were shining from a few of the windows. She’d studied the Google terrain images on the journey, which showed that just the walls were still standing. Marcus’s trades-people had been busy, in what was likely a short space of time since the photos had been taken.

It was pretty clear now why he’d had to keep the ferals in London longer than he really wanted.

Mercifully, Arek had managed to calm Cara down. The evil look was still simmering away in her black eyes, but she’d hardly said a word in the last half-hour of the forty-five minute journey, sitting quietly in the seat at the navigation console, Arek in another seat by her side.

There was no sign of the knife, but Zana knew it would be there, ready for instant action, hidden in one of the pockets of her camo jacket.

‘We need to set down on what was the lawn of the formal terrace garden. It’s the only sensible place, and it’s right next to the main building. It looks like the ground is being used to store some building materials at present.’

She saw Arek nod out of the corner of her eye. ‘Will we stay invisible?’

‘Yes. It will be better for now if no one knows where my shuttle is.’

‘Good. Then I can take Marcus by surprise,’ growled Cara.

Arek wrapped an arm around her shoulder. ‘Baby, I have said, let’s talk to him first. Then we’ll see.’

Her reply was hissed out. ‘He lied to me.’

Zana had to intervene, before the knife was brandished in anger again. ‘Cara, we need to remain calm, find out what his intentions are, and confirm the others are safe. After that... well, it depends on what he says.’

Cara didn’t seem to think talking to him was a very good idea, but Arek squeezed her hand. ‘She’s right, baby. We have to make sure the others are okay.’

She looked up to him like she was about to protest, but then lowered her head and nodded to her lap. ‘Whatever you say, babe.’

Zana turned back to the controls, her gut already churning with a nauseous kind of fear. Arek would never detect the spooky, condescending tone in Cara’s voice, even though to Zana it was all too clear. And all too frightening. Getting her and her unstable head into Marcus’s care couldn’t come soon enough, as far as Zana was concerned.

Cara was scarily right. She did have the element of surprise. What she was planning to do with it was the million-dollar question.

Zana managed to set the shuttle down on what had once been the slightly-sloping formal lawn, right next to the house. Barely fitting in between the trees that no one had yet got round to sorting, the pointed nose ended up twenty feet from the east wall.

Cara was out of her seat almost before the shuttle had met the ground, but Arek managed to restrain her enthusiasm, and eased her to the windows. ‘Let’s just see what we can from here first, yeah?’

The imposing east wall didn’t have too many windows. There was one arched doorway on the ground floor of the pale-grey stone building. It looked old and disused, but over the top of that was a stone stairway leading to another door on the first floor. That looked newer, and light was shining from the big cast-iron gothic window frames set in an angled bay close to it. Someone was up... or maybe just didn’t like the dark.

To their left the ground rose up to more stone walls, and then beyond them into a steep wooded hillside. To their right, a long line of pseudo-battlements formed a low wall that curled into a large semi-circular shape right next to them. If gas barbeques had existed in Hesketh’s days, that was where the staff would have been cooking away on a summer’s night.

Before they landed, Zana had already noticed the ground
