The RTG mission in life is simple... to not be like everyone else! ‘Going Green’ has taken on a new meaning, in the book world at least. Whilst we applaud the original meaning (ebooks are a perfect way to promote that) we also try to present a different angle to it. The tendency these days is that if you don’t look and read like everyone else, you don’t sell books. Maybe there’s some truth in that, but we simply don’t do it. The RTG books have been described as a ‘breath of fresh literary air’, and, by those discovering us for the first time, ‘unexpectedly good’. We know many readers prefer the same-old same old, and that’s fine. It’s just not what you get from the RTG stable. Those who know about such things said it would take five years to become a proficient author... I scoffed at that. They were wise. It took six. It’s one reason why even today we remodel existing books, and will always do so. Right from the early years the stories were always good, but were put into words less well than they could have been! These days we have several series and a few standalones, the hit Daisy series most popular amongst them. In everything we do, the same provisos apply – Never the same book twice. If we can’t think up a good story, it doesn’t get written. The RTG brand is about exciting and twisty plots, a fast pace which doesn’t waste words, and endearing (sometimes slightly crazy) characters. We can never please everyone, but it works for us, and, it seems, for those who appreciate our work. Enjoy! Richard, Ann and the RTG crew

    Chapter 1

JANE DANIELS GRABBED the few remaining copies of the mug-shots from the back seat of her car, and followed her partner up the three steps to the main entrance of their local police station. It was late, gone ten in the evening, and raining the kind of cold rain that October tends to gift to autumn nights in London.

It was their final call of a long day, checking back in with the desk sergeant to make sure all was well before heading home. He would likely be just about the only one there, given the current situation. The few officers on the night shift would for sure be out combing the streets for the two criminals whose features they were now familiar with, but who were seemingly still impossible to find.

Checking in was unlikely to bring them any new revelations, but a quick conversation over an equally-quick coffee would put the lid on another unsatisfying day.

Jane forced a smile. ‘At least a takeaway Lamb Tikka Dhansak and a couple of brandies will help alleviate the frustrations, Paul.’

He laughed. ‘Got some leftovers in the fridge, but I will confess a little alcohol might help me sleep some.’

They walked into the reception area, and instantly realised there would be no coffee or conversation that night.

    Not with the desk sergeant.

At first they couldn’t see him, but as Paul Nicholson peered through the security screen he spotted him, stretched out on the floor. Using his key to unlock the access door, he knelt down next to the unconscious man. There was a little blood on the side of his head. It looked fresh.

‘I think he’s just unconscious, Jane. But it looks like this blow to the head is very recent.’

She pulled out her phone to call an ambulance, but didn’t get to press the keys. A sharp call from her partner made her look up, and a second later the muzzle of a gun was thrust into her back, effectively confirming the fact they weren’t alone.

    ‘Put the phone down.’

The voice was young, and hitched with a cocktail of fear and uncertainty. She turned slowly, and fixed her eyes onto the guy grasping the automatic rifle with slightly-shaking hands.

    ‘Hello, Arek.’

For a moment his narrowed eyes flickered as he heard his name spoken. He soon recovered. ‘Move, both of you. Into the squad room.’

‘What do you want, Arek?’ she asked as they did as they were told.

‘Just... just shut it.’ The barrel stabbed into her back, emphasising the order that had to be obeyed. She tried to think quickly. The young guy who was clearly out of his depth was still wearing the red jacket Zana had described, the hood pulled tight around his face to cocoon his head, and no doubt give him a false sense of security. She’d already noticed the shaking hands, heard the faltering voice... regardless of the consequences he would for sure pull the trigger if she made the wrong move.

Where was Cara? They were always together, just like Bonny and Clyde.

The squad room was empty, just a few low-powered desk lights illuminating the gloom. They were alone, but that wouldn’t last. Officers on the night shift would return from time to time, grabbing a quick break and reporting in. There was no telling when someone would show up.

It might be too late, if Cara got her way.

    ‘Arek, this is so wrong...’

I said shut it. One more word and I’ll shoot you.’

He would. Despite himself. He was on the edge, a volatile mix of desperation and need. Things could go either way. She glanced to Paul, standing silently a few feet away. His eyes met hers, telling her he was thinking exactly the same.

‘Well, well. Nice of you to pop in, Detective Inspector.’

She came out of the gloom on the far side of the room, hurrying quickly from the passageway that led to the interview rooms and the rest of the station. She’d clearly been looking for, and found, the room she needed.

The weapons bag in her hand confirmed the reason for their evening visit.

The long pseudo-camouflage jacket was unbuttoned to reveal a red maternity dress, and the rather large bulge in her stomach. Her straggly blonde hair was tied back, something which made her hollow cheekbones look even more menacing. The confident, scary smile on her lips served only to make the whole hotchpotch of the image ever more terrifying.

She strode closer, snatching away one of the photocopies that were still in Jane’s arms, and shaking her head with a combination of amusement and disgust.

‘I have to admit it’s a good likeness. I wonder how you managed to get us so accurate?’

Jane didn’t answer, but Cara didn’t intend waiting for the answer she already knew. She turned away and showed the mug-shots to Arek. ‘Baby, look... you are so handsome...’

He flicked his eyes away from his captives for a second to glance at the artist’s impressions. ‘Sure, but we need to go. You get what we came for?’

The evil grin got wider. ‘Of course, babe. The armory was full of weapons, but I was a good girl. I just borrowed a couple of rifles and a stack of ammo.’

She handed the bag to Arek, and took control of the automatic rifle he’d been holding. Then her hot breath drifted across Jane’s left cheek, followed by the barrel of the gun. ‘You see, detective, there’s only one bullet left in this gun, but it just maybe has your name on it.’ She switched her gaze to Paul, her eyes narrowed into determined slits. ‘Or his...’

Jane was all too aware she was even more likely to lose her life in Cara’s loose-fingered hands than she was in Arek’s. She sucked in a deep, faltering breath. ‘Please just go. You got what you came for.’

The manic grin came even closer. ‘You begging now, detective?’

‘Would it make any difference, Cara?’ she asked defiantly, knowing no matter what she said it wouldn’t change the outcome in any shape or form.

Hmm... it might. If you beg hard enough.’

The finger curled around the trigger and tightened its grip. About to demean herself and beg for her life as hard as she had to, she suddenly didn’t need words. Arek was starting to panic.

‘Baby, please... someone will be here any minute. No more killing, okay?’

His voice was frantic, cracking with fear. Cara looked at him, a wave of anger in her eyes for a second because he’d disturbed her fun. Then she smiled a totally false warm smile, and the weapon moved away a little. She let out an over-dramatic sigh.

‘I guess you’re right, babe.’ Then, in a single second she turned back to Jane, strong fingers digging into her cheeks as she tightened a grip of iron around her face. ‘But you... think yourself lucky one of us isn’t so reckless...’

‘Reckless or not, Cara, we’ll still catch you.’

    ‘I don’t think so.’

The hand disappeared, but not before its owner had given her prey a huge shove. Ten seconds later she was gone, together with Arek and the weapons bag. As they disappeared, Jane let out a desolate cry and slumped onto one of the chairs in the empty room. Paul ran to her and took her hand.

‘I’m sorry, Jane... I wanted to try something, but the look in her eyes...’

She wrapped her hand around his, and tried to smile as she sucked in a deep breath. The words were a croaky whisper as she swallowed hard and rubbed her neck. ‘It’s alright Paul, there was nothing you could do. Between them they held all the cards.’

He saw the shudder wracking her body. ‘You okay now?’

She nodded weakly. ‘Physically, I suppose. But in fifteen years dealing with the bad guys, I’ve never seen a look on a face as chilling as Cara’s.’

    Chapter 2

THE NEXT MORNING, ASSIA was first to arrive. As she led me through the delights of the torture chamber once more, she seemed quite pleased with what she was seeing.

‘You are doing very well, Madeline. I’m impressed.’

I had to cringe inside. Considering what she didn’t know about mine and Zana’s antics in the shower the previous evening, it was another miracle something else hadn’t snapped, or at the very least got itself into a place from which there was no return. I smiled sweetly to the pretty Indian girl who didn’t take any nonsense, and avoided mentioning the fact I’d been standing kind of upright, and kind of separated from the flack-jacket.

‘I must be a quick healer, Assia,’ I said, as innocently as I could.

The small hands that were a lot stronger than they looked strapped me up infuriatingly-tightly again, and then she went to examine Zana. She seemed even more impressed with her progress, removing the bandages on her leg and nodding approvingly.

‘You’re powers of recovery are indeed amazing, Zana,’ she said.

Zana knew her ability to mend quickly had its limits. ‘If it
