    Introduction

It’s funny how life comes full circle. Some of my earliest childhood memories of crafting are actually those of my Nanna teaching me to crochet. I would have been around 9, and Nanna gave me some of the yarn she was working with and taught me how to make a simple granny square. I was instantly hooked, and I obsessively made granny square blanket after granny square blanket. Any scrap yarn I could get my hands on went toward adding to my growing blanket. I loved to watch the colors change as it grew. I have the most treasured memories of our endless conversations and her holding her hand over mine as she taught me the crochet stitches.

My mum used to sew and make many of the clothes we had as kids. She would also furnish our bedrooms with pillows and all sorts of other fabric décor. With Mum often at the sewing machine, there would always be fabric scraps lying about and she used them to teach me to machine sew, introducing me to a world of fabric possibilities. With scraps left from a bedroom makeover for my younger sister, I set about making my first quilt when I was about 16 years old.

I can look back and appreciate the skills my Nanna and Mum taught me and realize how they have become woven throughout my own creative pursuits. I didn’t set out

to become a quilting, sewing, and crochet pattern designer, nor an author or fabric designer—but I now see that these creative pursuits not only run through my veins, but also hold my heart.

This book literally blends my favorite crafts, walking you through quilting and crocheting and giving you useful tips and tricks to guarantee success. The two-part

step-by-step projects demonstrate first how to sew the designs in fabric and then how

to create the same pieces using crochet techniques. The beginner-friendly patterns, even if you’re well-versed in one of the crafts, will inspire you to try the other. Try making a beautiful keepsake quilt with your favorite fabrics, then match it using crochet techniques to create a blanket for all occasions.

Whether you’ve recently found more time to dedicate to learning something new, simply want to pass time and relax, or have seen others creating and making and want in on more of the crafty action, this book is for you. Learning a new hobby is always a little daunting at first but once you gain confidence in your skills, using them to turn a pile of fabric or yarn into stunning pieces becomes so rewarding. I hope this book will inspire you to get creative with quilts and fall in love with crochet!

One of the most interesting parts of working up designs for both quilting and crochet is matching your fabric and yarn colors.
