Introduction
This book has been written to provide you with an easy step-by-step guide on how to toilet train your dog efficiently with a positive, gentle, fair and fool-proof approach that is simple for everyone to understand, especially your dog!
Toilet training is actually a relatively easy concept to grasp once you have established a structure and routine that will work for your dog, yourself and your household. This may look a little different for everyone, so this book supports you in approaching toilet training in a way that works for your dog and your circumstances in the best possible way.
Ideally, getting puppies and adult dogs into good habits from day one or as early as possible is a great goal. The clarity provided within the communication we put forward to our dogs throughout this process is extremely important. This is so we can provide our dogs with a high level of consistency throughout the process of learning, which in turn supports efficient development.
You may notice throughout this book the terms ‘puppy’ and ‘dog’ are used interchangeably at times, as we are speaking about toilet training for all age groups. However sometimes we may specifically reference puppies or other age groups, when information is relevant to a particular life stage.
This system of toilet training has efficiently guided many of my clients and their dogs towards toilet training success and provides a simple, yet informative understanding of how to get your dog into good habits and toilet trained, pronto!
A big part of supporting your dog towards these goals is having a well-rounded understanding of what is required, so you can plan your approach and deliver with good guidance. It doesn’t need to be overly complicated, as at the core it is really based on common sense and understanding your dog and their overall needs. Trust me, this will all come quite naturally once you become accustomed to the fundamental aspects of toilet training.
Very soon you’ll be able to start trusting your dog indoors without worrying about accidents and be able to include them more as part of your family and in your daily life, so let’s get started.
Chapter 1
The What & Why? - Definitions & Goals
This might seem like a silly question, but it’s important to understand what we mean by a well-rounded, toilet trained dog.
Many dogs who are thought of as toilet trained may not be 100% proofed in terms of their ability to hold on, going on cue, and avoiding the odd accident every now and again.
Understanding the answer to this question helps you devise your overall goal in terms of toilet training, so you can work towards the aspects of toilet training that are important to you and your family now and into the future.
For clarity I have listed below what we feel constitutes to a fully toilet trained dog:
•A dog that can hold on for the entire time they are crated or indoors appropriate to their age
•A dog that has NO accidents indoors or in their crate
•A dog that can hold it overnight, negating the need for a toilet break until morning
•A dog that can clearly indicate they need outdoor access to toilet
•A dog that can go to the toilet on cue
There are a range of reasons why you might be initiating toilet training. Everyone’s circumstances and dog are different, so there could be a variety of reasons you have reached this point with your dog.
Some reasons may include:
•Age of the dog & development stage - Whether that be starting out puppy toilet training, adolescent training (around the time of sexual maturity) or supporting a senior dog’s toileting habits. We recommend beginning toilet training with your dog as early as possible.
•Lack of prior toilet training - In some cases a dog may have very limited or no toilet training experience at all, which can present obvious issues and limitations in a few different areas. Ideally, we like to keep our indoor spaces hygienic and clean so this aspect of training is fundamental if your dog also frequents your indoor spaces.
•Rehoming or adoption - If an adult dog has been re-homed or adopted, additional support may also be required in the new home. New lifestyle routines and environments may warrant supplementary encouragement via prompts or schedules to support the dog in understanding expectations in their new home.
•Behavioural issues - Certain behavioural issues relating to a dog experiencing stress and insecurity may warrant further proofing around toilet training, to support them towards improved behaviour and a better quality of life.
•Health issues - Certain health or physical issues may prompt a more structured approach to toilet training and routines. This may be required with older dogs due to mobility and cognitive capabilities, or dogs that have experienced some level of illness or injury.
•Future plans with your dog – Toilet training may factor into your future plans or goals with your dog like travel, participating in sporting activities, if the dog has a working role or just general daily activities may prompt the need for a soundly toilet trained dog.
There are a range of reasons why toilet training is fundamental
