We’ve all been there

Everyone will make mistakes when training gundogs. Every dog is different, every training journey is different. With the help of my existing clients, mentors and fellow trainers, I have highlighted the five main mistakes I regularly come across when training novice clients and their gundogs.

1. Rushing in and missing crucial steps

When a handler buys their first gundog, they are usually filled with excitement, nerves and the best intentions to work their dog. Dogs are highly intelligent and absorb everything thrown at them for the first six to 16 weeks of their lives. It is very easy to get carried away during this period. With social media influences of ‘perfect videos’, it can be easy to follow this and self-compare, rush training and miss crucial steps.
