Crash My Redemption - Payne Craven

    Prologue

    Ten years ago

Fifteen-year-old Nadine bounces around outside her father’s office. She cannot wait to show him that she has finally shifted into her other form. She is a late bloomer and much to her father’s displeasure, not a boy either. She can never seem to do anything right according to him. She is hopeful that since she finally was able to shift, he will accept her in the skulk. Her Father ushers her inside his office, What is it that has you so fidgety girl. He always says girl like it’s a dirty word. She hates it and makes a face at him.

Father, I have finally shifted, she blurts out.

He stares at her, Well go on then, lets see. Nadine undresses quickly and wills her fox, who she has named Gypsy, forward. It takes her a few minutes to fully shift, but suddenly where she once stood upright, now sat a silver and black fox. She trots over to her father and swishes her tail around, prancing in place. He father scowls and stands quickly.

A silver and black fox just like your mother. I should have known, you killed your mother in childbirth, of course you’d carry her fox. I hoped you would be a red fox and join my skulk. I should have known better. You pathetic girl. You are nothing! You will never amount to anything! No one will ever love you! I cannot stand to look at you. Get out of my sight! A single tear slides down her face as she runs out of his office. Her heart feels as though it is shattered into a million pieces. She only wanted to show him her fox form. She doesn’t understand what she did wrong. She wonders if he will ever love her, after all, that is all she truly longs for. She wipes her tears away and stands up straighter.

‘We will have to try harder, Gypsy," she tells her fox. She knows most don’t name their other form, but she is not like them. She is reminded of that everyday by her father and the other red foxes. She will never fit in; the skulk is stuck in their traditions. ‘Skulk, what a stupid name for a group of foxes,’ she says to her fox. Gypsy yips back at her, "Just because this skulk treats you badly, does not mean that other groups would do the same." Gypsy bares her teeth and retreats to the back of her mind. "Wait Gypsy, don’t go," Nadine calls out and the silver and black fox cautiously heads back towards the forefront of Nadine’s mind, her head lowered. Oh, how she wishes she could hug Gypsy, I am sorry Gypsy. I didn’t mean to anger you. I am just so confused. What did I ever do to deserve to be treated this way by my father and the others? Gypsy yips back at her, We don’t need to try harder. We need to find another crew that will accept us. Maybe a mate to love us. Things can be better.

    Chapter One

    Nadine

Nadine wakes with a start and sits up abruptly. The room begins to spin so she quickly lays back down. She brings her hands up to her face and her arms feel heavy. They are chained
