What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive and irreversible neurological disorder that affects the brain, causing a decline in cognitive and functional abilities over time. It is the most common cause of dementia, a syndrome that involves a significant loss of cognitive and intellectual functioning that interferes with daily activities.
Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the accumulation of protein plaques and tangles in the brain, which disrupts the normal functioning of neurons and causes them to die. This, in turn, leads to a loss of brain tissue and an overall shrinking of the brain.
Here is an overview of how Alzheimer's disease affects the brain, and the stages of damage and deterioration:
1. Early stage: In the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, there is a build-up of abnormal proteins, including beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles, in specific areas of the brain, particularly the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. This build-up can interfere with communication between brain cells, leading to mild cognitive impairment and memory problems.
