Someone with OCD has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviours (compulsions), feeling urges to repeat actions over and over. These interfere with all aspects of life, including study, work and relationships.
Obsessions are repeated thoughts, urges or mental images causing anxiety – such as fear of germs, dirt or contamination. Unwanted or taboo thoughts involving sex, religion or harm can lead to aggressive thoughts. Compulsions then follow as repetitive behaviours that give brief relief from the anxiety.
