Chapter One: A Special Time of Year
Olivia, Jade, and Ozzie whispered at their desks during snack time. They had just said their morning prayer and settled into their morning routine of morning prayer, morning snack, math, and science. Olivia and her friends went to a very fancy private school in the city. Everyone in the class was excited because, during art class, Mr. Pickett announced that the students would begin working on their Easter murals! Every grade would create a special mural for the prayer garden and parents and family would be able to come and see the murals during the Easter service held at the school.
Last year, none of the students were able to attend the special ceremony because of Covid. Olivia’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, treated Olivia to an egg hunt in their big backyard but it wasn’t the same without Nana and Papa, her grandparents who lived all the way in Atlanta, Georgia. Olivia had fun finding the eggs because her daddy challenged her to a race and kept tickling her to try and take some of her eggs out of her basket, but she still missed her grandparents and her friends. This year would be different.
Olivia took out her snack, a banana with a small container of yogurt, and a note from her mama that said, Have a great day at school, baby girl.
Olivia smiled at the note and began to eat her snack. She glanced at Ozzie’s snack and made a funny face. Ozzie was eating pickles with a boiled egg, and the smell made Olivia and Jade giggle.
Ozzie, you’ve had the same snack since we first met! Don’t you ever want to try something different?
Jade asked.
