    Woman in love

    CH 01:

Sunday May 17th. Callie Carrington woke up to see sunlight streaming through the bedroom window. She rolled over and found herself alone in bed... just like she had gone to bed the night before.

Oh my goodness, she thought to herself, don't tell me that Cindy spent the night with Tim Jenkins and left Betsy with me.

She got up and checked the other bedroom. Betsy's bed was empty. As she walked back into the main room, the front door opened and in walked Cindy Ross in gym clothes and Betsy in her arms.

Good morning. said Cindy. It's beautiful outside this morning so I took Betsy for a walk. Did you have fun, Betsy?

    Yes. said Betsy.

When did you come home? asked Callie.

Around midnight. said Cindy. You were asleep, so I fell on the sofa. Only then did Callie see the sheet crumpled up at the end of the sofa.

Callie made coffee while Cindy fed Betsy. As they sat at the breakfast table, Cindy said, Bowser and Sadie Mae have met again and they should have another litter of puppies in a few months. Should I tell Don we want one of them? Betsy loves Bowser and Buddy.

Uhhh, I don't know. said Callie. I have to travel a lot, your police schedule is pretty much 'always on call' and your mum has said she likes Bowser and Buddy, but she doesn't want to look after a dog or cat all the time. And you'll have your hands full with the baby on the way in a few months.

Yes, that's a point. said Cindy. By the way, I wanted to ask you something else. With all the rioting in the big cities, including Southport, Tim will be up here a lot more at the request of Jack Muscone. Why not? Will you come to dinner with us one night?

I don't know if that's a good idea. Callie said Cindy looked over at her and then looked at her.

You don't like him, do you? said Cindy.

It's not that. said Callie. It's... well, let's put it this way: If I were seriously dating someone, say Benny Black, and I asked you to come to dinner with us, how would you feel?

I... uh... well, I don't know. said Cindy. If you were pregnant and he was the father, I would probably understand and have dinner with you.

Really? Callie said a little sharply. You would be okay with me seriously dating another man, having another person like that in my life?

Cindy looked at Callie for a moment and then said, You're worried that I'm going to leave you for Tim?

I don't know. said Callie. "Look. I'm the last person in the world who can complain that you're having sex with someone else, even another guy. After all, I make porn movies every time I go to California. But you've been spending a lot of time with Tim like you're dating him and you're pregnant with his baby right now. So yeah, I'm wondering where we are right now.

Cindy nodded. Well... I've never thought about it other than that we're in love and we're going to get married and hopefully soon. But yeah... I'm having a baby and Tim will be a part of the baby's life.

How much a portion? said Callie. Is he more than a sperm donor to you?

Hold onto. said Cindy. First of all, yes he is... he's the father of that baby in me. And yes, I want him to be a father to the baby so they live in each other's lives.

How can you say that? said Callie. What about me? what about us And it's your baby, not his!

That shocked Cindy. No, it's Tim's baby too. After a pause, she said, Look, Don wants to be a father to Greta, but when Sandra Speer took her to New York and didn't even want to send Don a picture of her, it hurt him, and it hurt him now, there. he can't be there for his daughter when she needs him. I don't want to hurt Tim like that.

But what about us? said Callie. If we get married, the baby will be mine too, right?

And the flip side of that. Cindy continued. "Paulina Patterson kept Tasha from Don for a while, then she realized Tasha needed a daddy, and Don was... and is... a great daddy. And Laura was fine with that, and she and Paulina are very close. Paulina knows she's not Don's wife, that he doesn't put her first like Laura.

Cindy continued, That might not be the best analogy. Maybe like divorced parents with children and a parent remarrying. Anyway, what it comes down to is ... I'm not asking you to be close to Tim, just to realize that he's going to be a part of the baby's life.

After a long silence, Callie said she was going to take a shower, leaving Cindy in a long reverie...

    Part 2 - Unpacking adjectives

    "I unpacked 'frustratingly' at first.

Reached in and found the word worst.

    Then I chose 'squishy' and

    Next, I chose foggy and

Then I was ready to tell them my story.

Because I had unpacked my adjectives."

    -—Schoolhouse Rock, 'Unpack Your Adjectives'

This is Bettina Wurtzburg, KXTC Channel Two News! shouted the red-haired MILF reporter Tuesday, May 19 at 7:00 a.m. from the top of the Riverside and College building, with police headquarters in the distance behind her. The police union denounced the inspector general!

Bettina began: "Inspector General Horace S. Wellman has been convicted of his findings, published yesterday, that Commander Troy did nothing wrong in physically assaulting a police sergeant who the union alleges was a black man believed to be... he was kidnapped, lawfully stopped a child. The union has filed several complaints against Commander Troy and meetings to resolve these issues are expected today or tomorrow. Commander Troy has suspiciously refused to respond to repeated requests from KXTC Channel Two News for comment on the matter.

Bettina: And now we go to trusted political reporter Lester Holder to find out more about the protests that are taking place in many parts of the state and nation. Lester!

That's right, Bettina! said Lester 'Penis' Holder from the parking lot of Jazzclub 'Jasmine'. "An unarmed black man who was handcuffed and forced to lie on the ground was suffocated by a Wilmington, Delaware police sergeant by placing his boot on the man's neck for over eight minutes. After the incident was posted on YouTube and other social media, the four police officers involved were arrested but have not yet been charged. As a result of the murder, as well as the slow response to the arrest of the murderous police officers, unrest is beginning to break out across the nation, and black frustration is erupting at the brutal tactics of police aggression against people of color.

Penis Holder: Several blocks in The City, southwest of City International Airport, have suffered extensive fire damage as rioting and looting are rampant there. In Southport, protesters attempted to approach the quay and docks, including the famous Dagny Piers, but were brutally beaten back by police and what has been dubbed 'security forces'. Experts say these security guards may have mob connections and are using brutality against peaceful black protesters at the direction of white organized crime bosses.

Penis Holder: "In Midtown, the Inner Midtown and East Midtown areas suffered major fire damage as protests erupted there again. Those areas had been designated 'police-free zones,' but Midtown boss Frank Soltis ordered his shock troops to brutally repress peaceful protesters there. However, the Midtown Police Department is no longer trying to ban the protesters there, but is confining the protests to the Inner Midtown area.

Penis Holder: Inner Midtown State Representative Tasheeka Harris is furious with the Midtown Police Department and has demanded that the Midtown Mayor and Council fire Chief Soltis and order the MPD to back off their lines and not harass the peaceful protesters The. Midtown politicians have refused to show any backbone and stop police brutality."

Penis holder: Channel Two News also learned that the city's mayor, Lucian Phelps, has sued the deeply unpopular Gov. Val Jared after Jared told the state's National Guard to prepare for activation with the intention of killing them. send in to violently end the peaceful protests City. That district's Supreme Court Justice, Mohammed Omar, issued a stay barring the governor from deploying state troops or state law enforcement agencies. Back to you, Bettina!"

Thanks for this insightful report, Lester! said Bettine. And now let's go to Amber Harris to find out more about the situation on the ground. ambergris!

That's right, Bettina! said the athletic blonde from the same rooftop Bettina was on, but positioned to show the State Office Building in the background. It was relatively quiet here in our city and district. Police have allowed peaceful daylight protests but have firmly enforced a morning-to-evening curfew. However, they are not strictly enforcing the curfew until midnight.

Amber: Police Chief Sean Moynahan, responding to a request for comment from KXTC, said the curfew will be eased into the early evening hours to allow restaurants and bars to remain open and conduct business while the school is still in school. This is final exams week, and graduation is Saturday at university.

Amber: And in local politics, Dr. Joseph E. Williams refused to allow the district's main race to replace Reginald BF Lewis and has refused to endorse that race's winner Edgar Silas, despite calls from state Democrat party and local civil rights leaders to do so. Silas won by 228 votes, and a recount was ended when a water main failure damaged almost half of the paper ballots cast and the State Democrat Party refused to pay for another election. Let's get back to you, Bettina!

Thanks, Amber! said Bettina when the food returned to her. And in the Council race for Kelly Carnes' seat, Republican Bill Redmond filed complaints with the federal and state electoral boards, accusing Ms. Carnes of money laundering violations by making these bizarre, false allegations...

adjectives. I said as we drank coffee in the boss's conference room. Many, many ... adjectives.

What do you mean, crowbar? asked Sheriff Griswold.

When the media starts using a lot of adjectives, I replied, then we know that they are not reporting facts, but their opinions. In fact, the adjectives themselves are opinions; ergo, proof of my concept, there. All of this was opinion propaganda, not accurate news journalism.

Yes sir, you got that right. said Lt. Commander Teresa Croyle. These KSB and national reporters use the adjective 'peaceful' to describe these protests...while right behind them on camera buildings are burning, people are looting and other people are throwing rocks at each other and the police. It would be funny if people didn't get hurt and even die.

I said, My adjectives for the press are 'frustrating', as in my frustration with them; 'worst', as in relation to the level of their reporting; and 'foggy', as in the state of their mental abilities.

I hope you're not frustrated with the relative calm in this county, Mr. Crowbarrrr, the chief said.

I hope it stays that way, sir. I said. But it doesn't take much for them to come at us.

Out of curiosity, said Commander Cindy Ross, perhaps even as an intellectual exercise...why is it so relatively peaceful here?

Because the TCPD fell like a ton of bricks on this 'police-free zone'. said Captain Tanya Muscone. And that's my favorite FBI agent's opinion as well as mine. We allow peaceful marches, and they know we're going to crack down on violence, so they chant their slogans, march down the street with their signs, and go home after dark like the rest of us.

Teresa said: "I would add that TCPD's crackdown on the media helped a lot.

And we must be careful when we say that out loud, Ms. Croyle, drawled the boss. KXTC is already threatening to sue us for firing bean bags, rubber bullets and tear gas at Lester Holder and his news crew.

Bring it on. I said. I'd like to take their asses to court and grill them.

Our taxpayers have to pay for this, Mr. Crowbarrrr. replied the chief.

All right, sir. I said conceding the argument.

So what's up with the Union? asked Cindy. Now that IG has found out that McCombs tried to murder an unarmed black man, even though KXTC didn't include that in their report this morning, will the Union drop their stupid complaint?

The chief said, "So far they haven't.

Cindy said, Even if they win the McElwane complaint, what about it? Is it really that bad?

It's piling up. I said. And trying to gather support at the base. Trying to create divisions and discord.

Speaking of the grassroots, Teresa said, I'm going to meet with the district leadership this morning and see how much trouble the Union is causing over all of this.

To change the subject, Tanya said with a slight wink, when will Commander Ross and Callie Carrington go on a date?

Uhhh, we're looking at this summer. said Cindy. When my father is back in the country.

But there was something about the way she said it, and I allowed myself to slowly turn my head to look at her. My gray eyes met her ice blue eyes. We entered a Blink contest until everyone could see what we were doing.

The sheriff broke the awkward silence by standing up and saying, I'll go across the street and see how our EMS friends are doing. Then the coffee gossip broke up...

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

7:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 19. Cindy Ross knocked on my open door and walked in.

Good morning. I said. Are you feeling okay? Morning sickness still a problem?

Not so much, Cindy replied, but you'll understand if I rush out of here during the Angels meeting. I nodded. Cindy then said And don't say anything. She said earlier about our 'Blink' competition.

I haven't said a word and I won't. I answered. Unless you really want it by saying you don't want it.

That sounds like one of Carole's games. Cindy said as she sat down. Anyway, 'The Vision' has its summer camps most weeks of the summer, but my dad said he's going to give me a weekend off...what? She saw me looking at her.

These camps are reserved months in advance. I said. That's a lot of people saying their camp has been canceled.

No, we wouldn't cancel anything. said Cindy. But on your point, we haven't set anything in stone yet.

The entry of my other angels saved Cindy from being scrutinized even more. We continued to do business.

I have a question. said Teresa. I don't think the McCombs' complaint will become routine. What happens there?

I nodded and said, "Yes, it's going to be... 'complex' to coin a phrase. First off, we really have two grievances and two problems: McCombs and McElwane. The McElwane grievance should be routine: she should go one Panel hearing, then maybe to the Public Safety Review Board, the short panel, or the full meal deal.

The Public Safety Review Board consisted of 13 people: the sheriff, his chief of staff, the police chief, the fire chief, the chief of emergency services, the public health officer (PHO), the police commander, the assistant police chief, the assistant fire chief, the fire marshal, and the assistant emergency services Chief and two assistant PHOs. The short body would consist of the sheriff and the four chiefs of his departments.

I continued, McCombs' situation is very complex because McCombs has been charged with felonies as well as criminal disobedience and other LEO-specific crimes. Normally that would be fought out in court, and that would normally take care of the rest of it.

I continued: However... the union is attempting to consolidate the two into one and make me the subject of both grievances through mediation, rather than a thorough internal investigation. We'll try to split them into two cases, but we'll have to see how that works.

    *BRING!* *BRING!* *BRING!* *BRING!*

It was my police iPhone, and it was Jack Muscone, the FBI special agent in charge, calling. Hello Jack. I said when I answered. I'm in a meeting with your boss, Mrs. Muscone. Tanya grinned at me.

Put me on speakers. said Jack. When I did that, he said, We're having an 'all hands on deck' meeting in the Federal Building. Any of you with top secret clearance are invited to come along. and SSA Melina Allgood guarantee your safety, Don.

Nevertheless, I replied, I will bring angels to watch over me.

Awww. said all three of my angels at once...

Part 3 - All hands on deck

9:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 18. We gathered in a large boardroom on the second floor of the federal building. The sheriff, chief, me, my angels, Jerome Davis and Joanne Warner were there. Jack Muscone's team of Karina White, Julius Jefferson, Melina Allgood, Ted Crenshaw and Tim Jenkins were in attendance, as were Ashton Cardigan and Lindy Linares. Dwight Stevens was there as a DEA representative. And to my surprise, my wife Laura and Callie Carrington were in the house.

Of course I went and sat next to Laura in the back row of chairs. Wow, they got you out of bed early, huh? That must be big. I said. Laura tried to pinch my hip but the 'belt' saved me... I knew there was a good reason to wear it!

Callie sat on Laura's other side and Cindy went to sit with her. The rest of the TCPD contingent was right in front of us, with the exception of Tanya, who was parked at the end of the front row.

Laura said: EAD Lange called me and asked me to bring Callie with me. As far as I know the physical security of the federal buildings in the city and Southport is in question because of all the rioting so Jack had the people he needed come over here. I nodded.

A moment later, Jack Muscone and Karina White walked in and Jack walked to the podium. Thank you all for coming. he said. Don, you're hiding back there with the CIA?

I took Laura's hand in my own and said, I'm sitting with my wife so you can all see that I'm the happiest man in the room. All the women giggled. Laura smiled and squeezed my hand.

Jack said, I take the title of lucky one, with my lovely wife here with us. That, too, caused a round of Awww among the ladies.

Jack said: "Okay, I invited the TCPD people out of courtesy, but I'm happy to update you on our activities as I do across the nation. EAD Lange will talk about that in a moment. We also have some news related to drug operations that Dwight Stevens will update us on in a minute.

Muscone: First, and primarily to TCPD ears, the Jocelyn Moran issue, including her shooting and killing, is being considered a closed case by the OPR, the Deputy Director of the FBI, and the Attorney General. And SSA Allgood was fully exonerated, and the incident was itself declared a good shot".

Yayyy. Teresa said a little louder than she should. Everyone giggled, albeit a little quietly.

EAD Owen Lange stood up and said, Don't party too much. Elements of the USDOJ civil rights department are embittered, as is DNI Brendan Chapel. Why don't I continue with my briefing.

He picked up a small key fob that controlled a laptop and a presentation appeared on the screen. At first, he began, the Wilmington, Delaware incident appears to be real. The sergeant who stepped on this unarmed man's neck had a history with this man. The fourth officer who tried to stop Sergeant was restrained. The other officers are also being charged with the total crime count by the local district attorney. The judge, whose rulings tend to lean toward the left, denied a motion to Sever, which is being appealed saying that Wilmington, Delaware, has become a hub of filth and corruption in this country. Many of us nodded vigorously in agreement.

Secondly, said Owen Lange, we can't find any trace of money given to McCombs, whether by wire transfer or cash deposit, nor could we find anything about the white officer who shot that black man in town. Now I'm at the Iron Crowbar camp as coincidences are unlikely, but we haven't found a connection yet."

Third, said Owen Lange, "we have arrested and interrogated leaders of these anarchist groups that we see on videos that are fueling the riots. We've made some good progress and shown it's organized, but aside from the photos TCPD took from KXTC reporters speaking to agitators, we still have work to do to show how organized it is and how far the Heads of power in Washington and the media go up the collusion. Needless to say, the swamp frogs fight us all the time, Dr.

Thank you my Lord. said Jack Muscone. And now Dwight Stevens of the DEA will be reporting.

Thank you my Lord. said Dwight Stevens, coming up and fumbling with the laptop until another presentation appeared. One thing we have tried to examine is how the people who organize these uprisings are paid. We examine drug deals that divert the money and drug deals that provide the funding. Our supercomputers are gathering data to link drug dealer names to these political activists.

Stevens: Another thing we looked at is that money from the international drug trade is being brought into this country to support the orchestrated riots. The media likes to blame the Russians for everything, but we also look at the Iranian and Red Chinese interests behind the insurgents. We're working with the CIA on the foreign aspects of this, and Marla Hanson, who some of you know, worked with me from Langley. (Author's note: Unresolved, Ch. 03, for Marla Hanson.)

Any idea how they channel this money into this country? asked Owen Lange.

We have some general ideas, sir, but no specifics. Stevens replied. A common way is for someone in Europe to deposit money into an account in the Caymans or one of the many British-held Caribbean islands, then someone here reaches in and snatches it. Someone in the US government might be helping cover it up, too. Several people nodded.

After Dwight Stevens finished, Jack Muscone got up. We're bracing ourselves from here right now because Leftist rioters have been attacking federal buildings and courthouses. Portland, Oregon, was hit particularly hard, and political leaders there refuse to protect property, nor allow the federal government to protect it. It's a different political climate here in this county.

You recognized that correctly. I said a little louder than I should. There were some giggles in the room.

In order. said Muscone. This local federal building is very helpful to us and offers us space, here and in the Alte Post just behind this building. TCPD has also offered us space in the Alte Mühle, along the lines of the EMPTY QUIVER event all those months ago. And Dr. Fredricson will be working out of her office on campus, and we can have a few people there.

Muscone: Here are your tasks. Cardigan, I want you and Lindy to keep doing what you're doing, just do it from here, not out of town. From what I understand, we're fully equipped here to do your cyber research. Cardigan nodded.

Muscone: Ted Crenshaw, you are our contact for Southport and only work from here. There's room for you at the Old Post Office or The Old Mill. Julius, I need you to liaison with Midtown PD and be my contact for Midtown. If you need to go down there, that's fine, just let me know. And Tim Jenkins, I want you to be my liaison to the CIA. Work with Ms. Carrington in Dr. Fredricson's office. The eyes widened at that and it seemed as if an awkward silence slowly filled the room.

What? Muscone asked, looking around. There is a problem?

Uh, no sir. said Tim Jenkins. Callie said nothing.

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

When the meeting ended, I went to Dwight Stevens. I have a question for you about McCombs. I said. Did you all check if he had any cash inflows to pay for creating this racist situation?

We dont have. said Dwight Stevens. EAD Lange had his financiers work on it. We work with them all the time, but we didn't take part in these so-called 'peaceful protests'.

I nodded. Do me a favour. If I send you what TCPD had on McComb's drug discovery, do you think it might help find money McCombs paid for it?

You know, that's not a bad thought. Stevens said. I'll have my people check it out, but don't get your hopes up. Most drug deals like this are cash deals.

And the guys McCombs arrested had the drugs with them, no cash. I said. Well, it can't go anywhere...

Jack warned me about you saying things like that. Stevens said. Your 'maybe nothing' becomes 'definitely something'. I'll take a look...

Part 4 - Good for the soul

When I got back to my office, my nice assistant Helena handed me a note. "Corporal Hicks called and asked that you be sure to contact him as soon as possible.

Okay thanks. I said. When did he call?

About fifteen minutes ago. Helen said. I thanked her and continued to my office, closing the door and speed dialing Hicks on my police iPhone. The words blood spatter were codes of the blood order. Something big was going on.

Yes sir, thank you for calling me back, sir. said Hicks. Can you come to the county jail, sir?
