What is a Department of Computer Science? - Thomas Jonesmith
To computer science students.
Epigraph:
'Throughout history people have had to calculate quantities brutally and by hand. It would lead to the development of a machine that can calculate large numbers or computing. Out of this would come primitive machines able to do this. However in time inventors would want to improve the technology of this machine and also to revise it. It would see it change, evolve, and improve having other technologies being added to it. In time this machine, now called a computer would grow so enormously complicated that it now can do much more than calculate large numbers. Computers would evolve to become machines that can draw, learn, do email, invent, play chess, learn games, word process, and much more. Computers would become so enormous and advanced that a study would be founded to it, computer science. From what started as a hand calculator would become a machine that in the modern age would revolutionize the world.' -talk on computers
Dedication:
Computer science is a fairly 'new' kind of science. It would grow out of efforts to understand the technology of the computer. It blends learning from many subjects like physics, electronics, technology, inventing, psychology, video games, and much more. It would grow and evolve leading to the founding of computer science as an academic subject all its own. It is now taught in many colleges, trade schools, and wherever technology itself is taught and learned. It is a vibrant domain of science with many technologies, concepts, developments, and horizons.
Computer science is difficult to learn. It takes a foundation in science, math, technology, and more just to partake it. Mastering its domain takes years and is only for the most committed students. For the person who does learn it though, a world of opportunity opens to you. You are skilled for all kinds of job like computer operator, professor, web designer, systems administrator, help desk attendant, computer lab consultant, and much more. You won't become too rich out of your skills, but your training is advanced and desired in many places like the military, government, business, and in schools.
Many people would contribute and shape the saga of the computer. People would make a difference by developing a technology, suggesting an innovation, building a prototype, experimenting, and more. The science has many thinkers who would shape it in monumental and also microscopic ways. Famous names the subject knows include:
-Von Neumann -Lady Ada -Liebniz -Babbage -Steve Jobs -Bill Gates -Garry Kasparov -the IBM Deep Blue team -Atanasoff and Berry -Vannevar Bush, etc. It is filled with so many 'stars' who did something for this technology. To the person who learns computer science, in time you learn of these people.
Overall this book is dedicated to the student of computer science. You are learning a very difficult science and it will take years. You may be someone who will shape the future of the technology, perhaps becoming an epic name. If not the subject will define your life, career, and fate. I hope you enjoy it. You need to love computers to make a life in it.
'The computer is an accident of history, technology, and the modern age. It is applied to anything like the internet, business, government, the military, science, and anything else. In order to know the modern age, it seems you have to know computers.' -talk on computers
Introductory comments:
Computer science is a difficult subject to know, it is not easy.
It takes years to learn this science. Indeed in order to learn this science, you need to know more than this in order to know it. It is highly complicated with a tough vocabulary, difficult topics, and challenging technologies to learn. If you get introduced to computers early on in life, then it can grow on you from kid to adult. Computers are a technology of the modern age, found almost anywhere, useful for almost anything. Some education is needed just to be literate in the modern age.
In this book, we will review the nature of a computer science department, a place found on many college campuses. It is a difficult domain
