When The Blackbird Whistles: The Tales of Tralia, #1
()
About this ebook
I have been given a mission. Find the Blackbird.
To find Philip Hakorn, the leader of the Blackbird warrior guild, who was taken from his home. I have just retired as the first Minister of Pranda and was looking forward to my retirement. Riding around Tralia risking my life was not my first choice once released from duty. But this search leads me from my old training ground, down to the southern forest and into one of the river towns that holds more secrets than I thought possible. We must find my friend at all cost.
There was more to this than an abduction. Someone searched for the guild members kidnapping or murdering them. What were they searching for? What did Philip know that he became a target?
The Blackbird warriors were all summoned and when The Blackbird whistles all listen and obey.

Foreword
I finally slipped off my shoes and placed them beside the couch before putting my feet up. What an exhausting day to be sure. But my prime was finally alone with his wife and I, Gregor, First Minister of Pranda, could now go to bed.
Tomorrow I am away to the Prandain Hills as I am going to see a man about a boat. I have already seen the sailboat in the harbour, now I have tracked down the owner, who lives in Chaysford, to offer him a fair price. I have no wife to worry about as the only woman I ever cared anything for decided that this life was too rich for her and married a fisherman many years ago. So, it’s just me and my dog, Clem. I had the animal from a pup, but like me, he was now a bit long in the tooth and walking was about all the poor thing could do now and even that is an effort, hence the boat. I planned to spend my retirement days at sea or on the river. Either way, I could not wait for it to begin. When an adventure comes knocking in the early hours of the morning, but I have already had one adventure too many, so what will this adventure cost me, as I cannot refuse?
The Mission
I have been given a mission to find The Blackbird. To find Philip Hakorn, the leader of the Blackbird warrior guild, who was taken from his home. Riding around Tralia looking for answers that could cost me my life was not my first choice once released from my duty. I have just retired as the first Minister of Pranda and was looking forward to my retirement, as I am too old to go gallivanting around Tralia. My hunting, climbing, horse racing days are well and truly behind me. But this search leads me from my old training ground, down to the southern forest and into one of the river towns that holds more secrets than I thought possible, but we must find my friend at all cost. There was more to this than an abduction, I was sure. What did Philip know that he became a target?
The Blackbird warriors were all summoned and when The Blackbird whistles all listen and obey.
Chapter One
The Letter
I groaned as the bell chimed two. The annoying sound awoke me, and I got up slowly. Sleeping on the hard bench couch was not good at my age, so I dragged my sorry self into the bedroom and lay down on the bed. Clem had followed me and lay on his near the window. He never even looked up and, like me, was asleep the moment his head touched the pillow. I pulled the thick quilted blanket up over my shoulders and dreamed, the dream I had for many a-night, going back almost forty years.
Her tall, silhouette figure stood close, but not touching me. Her face was in shadow, too dark to make out, but I knew by my heart who it was.
My sleeping form turned, but my dreaming self-opened my eyes a little as I growled. She was so far out of my reach that I could not touch her, yet I could breathe in her scent that was so intoxicating. I wanted more, more than anything else in the world.
She banged her foot hard on the wooden floor. ‘Don't!’ She said through gritted teeth in an angry whisper. ‘I’m not yours. Stop calling me here. Please leave me be.’
I cannot, I thought. I miss you. My heart spoke back.
The bang came again as she faded further in the shadows. ‘I know, but I belong to another.’ Her words hung in the air.
Another bang, but it wasn’t Kiela. Disturbed, I opened my eyes fully and blinked hard, then rubbed the sleep out of them. Clem was already moving to the door, wagging his tail. Slowly, I moved too, groaning before sitting up. There it was again; someone was definitely banging. The noise echoed through to the bedroom. Who could it be at this hour? Dawn
