Phone away, Florence, you’re on the clock.

I look up guiltily and shove my phone in the deep pocket of my skirt. My boss, Mr Hargreaves, raises one eyebrow.

Sorry, I mumble. It won’t happen again.

To be honest I don’t even know why I was checking it. I’m beginning to understand the appeal of a digital detox. I’m sick of seeing perfect photos of friends and relatives living their best lives – glittering weddings, sun-soaked holidays, adorable babies, their newly-renovated houses…

Whereas here I am, working as a maid.

I suppose it could be worse. The Swan Hotel in Brighton is a beautiful Edwardian building with a lot of history. Mrs Hargreaves, who runs the hotel alongside her husband, loves the history so much that she insists on all the staff wearing Edwardian-inspired outfits. In my case, that means a black dress with a white ruffled apron and matching cap.

Except I’m pretty sure back in Edwardian times the dress would have been down to my ankles instead of only hitting mid-thigh.

I grab my cart of cleaning supplies and head up in the lift to the first floor. I decide to start at the end of the corridor and work my way back. The room at the end is one of the nicest, with a seafront view.

Housekeeping! I trill, knocking on the door.

Nobody answers, and there’s no DO NOT DISTURB sign hanging from the doorknob, so I use my master key to enter the room.

Standing in front of the mirror is a man with his shirt unbuttoned.

Oh gosh, sorry, I blurt out. I thought the room was empty.
