Chapter 1

Rachel

I ’m so glad we were able to find something perfect, I say, handing the small gift bag to Mr. Robertson.

I carefully placed the two-carat diamond solitaire in a beautiful box, wrapped it in a bow, and placed it in our distinctive gold and black gift bag. He spent two hours with me, looking at dozens of designs and options, checking the gems for clarity, reviewing their stats. He was so set on finding his girlfriend the perfect ring, which he will give to her on a carefully crafted, romantic night this weekend.

He takes a big breath in and then lets it out in a sharp huff. I don’t know why I’m so nervous, he says. She’s been hinting that she’s ready for months. I just really want her to know how much I take this seriously.
